I think mailing grad students for a feedback is a very good suggestion Scheng.

Gforce I have a friend at Austin too, pursuing his doctorate and he is the one who is strongly encouraging me to go for ann arbor. The problem is that if I had to compare only mech departments It was plain and simple that is ann arbor,but as there are no clear cut individual rankings on thermal and fluid sciences it has become a big problem for me.I have gone through each of the universities internet sites but have not found any decisive factor,considering thermal and fluid sciences,propulsion as a criteria for selection.

The major criterion i am considering are:-
1)Strength of research according to my interests(the most imp. criteria)
2)Overall Ranking of Mech Department
3)Location
4)Cost


Now if i consider the first criteria,i have been searching internet and have virtually been driven crazy but have not yet found a single decisive factor.
The sum of the rest three criterian also I think lands all universities at the same place.
