from everything i've heard internships don't really count towards the work experience requirement. In my case, i spent my last two summers at college doing internships as well as internships over the summer but have been told that they these dont count.
as far as getting into schools which dont require work experience...i know this girl who graduated from bentley undergrad and immediately did her mba a tthe same university. bentley's pretty low on the ranking though so, i think your hunch is correct - namely that to get into a decent university, something like insead in europe, you'll require substantial work experience. but then i read in the wall street journal about some kid who went straight from BU to stanford mba. i think that kid's a freak case though.
