Oh me? Not an econ PhD applicant (for 2006 at least), but I'm working on econ. research as a field-based RA. So far it's been an interesting opportunity to travel and work for some profs doing very cool work, but I am a very borderline PhD candidate. If I do apply, it probably won't be till 2007 so I have time to:
a) Get back to the U.S. and take some more high level math courses
b) Get outstanding and detailed
LORs (this will probably be the strongest area of my app)
c) Put some more distance between me and the first 2 years of undergrad
If not, then I probably will attend a less-rigorous MBA/MPP style program and end up working more towards the policy side (with the WB being a strong possibility there). Of course, all of this would have been a lot easier if I had actually started planning before getting to the end of undergrad, but the past is the past. Sunk costs and there's nothing I can do about it.
Love reading TM forums! The quality of discussion and people posting is definitely top-notch.
Good luck at Stanford next year!
