Hi Bryster: First, it is my understanding that none (or very few) of the phd students live on campus. They live off campus in apartments in Hyde Park (typically) within walking distance of our building. I think that there are very safe areas in Hyde Park and students tend to be concentrated in these parts. One nice thing is that prices here are cheaper than the North side and you have the academic community as well (which is truly amazing).
Second, I think there is (no doubt) some crime in Hyde Park. I have never been held up (I walk to the train station every night around 7pm for my train to Flossmoor) and have never had that fear though. 55th to 59th is safe from the tracks to University or so as far as I am concerned. Outside of that I have little information but the authorities tell me that the derivative is in the right direction (things are getting alot better than they used to be).
Hope this helps!
Best,
John
