hi there.
i am applying for economics phd program for fall 2007..i just gave my GRE today, got 1370 (780 in quant and 590 in verbal)..
As per my profile and background..
1) i am an international student currently studying in a decent state university for my masters in economics.
2) my undergrad degree is in business studies and information system.
3) undergrad GPA = 3.49, GPA in majors = 3.65
4) Graduate GPA so far = 4.0 (18 credits taken so far)
5) Relevant math and economics courses,
Undergrad
mathematics-1 (A), mathematics-2 (A), discrete mathematics (A), statistics-1 (A), statistics-2 (A), Quantitative Techniques (A),
Microeconomics (A), macroeconomics (A), i have bunch of other programming classes in which i got As..
Graduate:
Currently taking complex variables, and will take Real analysis in Spring..
Graduate Microeconomics (A), Graduate macroeconomics (A), graduate econometrics (A), Economic Growth (A), Financial Derivatives (A)..and few other business school classes in which i have all As.
Research Experience:
Worked as research assistant this summer for my university public policy institute. The professor i worked with is a labor economist who is currently a visting scholar at University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Teaching Experience:
I have been teaching assitant for last three semeseters for a micro class. Holding office hours and conducting review sessions..
Now, the thing is i know my math background look little inadequate. Since, i come from an international school, i dont have anything called calculus mentioned in my transcripit but math-1 and math-2 were like calc-1 and calc-2. How should i explain that to adcoms?
And will my taking of complex variables this sem (the pre-req for which is calc 1, 2 and 2) help at all....i am doing alright in my complex variable class, and i think at least i can get A- in it.. i dont think i will get the final grade by the time apply so will i need a LOR from my math professor..
My interests are macro, international economics, and economic development?
The schools i am interested in are UVA, john hopkins, maryland, BU, boston college, SMU, iowa, iowa state, santa cruz, emory, chapel hill, GMU,
What are my chances for schools like upenn, brown, penn state, cornell given my 780 in quant and lil inadequate math background? Does 780 disqualifies me..i really wanna go to school around DC area or nearby..
what should be the range of my safety school and what are my high list schools?
Please let me know..Thanks a lot..
