We've discussed that question in another thread recently, but I would sum it up by saying that New Haven has a nice mix of city life (entertainment, restaurants, bookstores, etc.) and semi-rural New England charm. If you want to go to a beach or picnic at a park, you don't have to fight traffic all day to get there. But if being in a truly big city is important to you, you'd probably rather go to NYU or Columbia.
While I don't know the department well, I'd note that in addition to a top metrics program, they have
Altonji teaching labor. That's a plus in my book.
