The gradchair of UPenn is a professor(not a secretary) and a "he".I thought it might be a printing mistake first, but the next line in his mail suggested that he meant it.In the next line,he said that there were more than 130 candidates this year with Math GRE score more than 750!But Deadskunk's "median theory" might be correct, though the gradchair used the word "average".
By the way, does anybody know about any reliable report of the ranking of US universities for Pure Math,or if possible, for Number Theory and Algebraic Geometry?(I know about phds.org and US World Report, but they include applied math also.)
