Do such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science? According to me,(this expression is a little bit strange.) I fundamentally agree with the statement that these nonmainstream areas play a role in satisfying human needs, which are not given by mainstream science. However, these nonmainstream are not vital to human, mainstream science plays the important role in human's daily life.
Admittedly, nowadays, there are such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits in our society. We should figure out the reason of these nonmainstream areas' existing. Thinking about these areas, we can find(out) that these nonmainstream areas can content some people's curiosity and confusion. Some people want to know what is the statement before they were born or after they are dying. Unfortunately, the mainstream science cannot answer these questions for them. So, they turn to ask these nonmainstream areas to get the "interesting" answer. Meanwhile, some people are unsuccessful in their working, school learning or marital life. They want to know the fortune about the future. So, they also resort to these nonmainstream areas to console their uncertain hearts. From these perspectives, these nonmainstream areas are indeed playing a role in society by satisfying human needs.
However, does the nonmainstream play a vital role in society? The answer to this question does not decide by whether these nonmainstream areas play a role in society or not. It should decide by how many people believe these nonmainstream areas, how many people participate in these areas and the result of these nonmainstream areas is right or not. It is obviously that these nonmainstream areas cheat people by some stories, which are fabricated by these nonmainstream areas' people. The mainstream science plays the important role in society.
We can imagine(why you imagine? the examples you give is from out daily life.) the importance of the mainstream science. When we are sick, we should go to see doctor; When go out to a long distance, we should travel by airplane or train; When we want to contact with our parents or friends, we should use the telephone, or EMAIL. The nonmainstream areas cannot help us to get these life conveniences. The vital problems to our human beings need the mainstream science to solve. It is no doubt that the mainstream science is vital to us.
In sum, from what have been discussed above, the nonmainstream areas play a role in society by satisfying human needs to some extent. However, we cannot accept that these nonmainstream areas play a vital role to us. The really importance for us is the mainstream science.
