Taken more math classes. The professor I worked for had gone to NYU and was friendly with the director of the PhD program there. He asked why I was not accepted and was told that it was because of my relatively weak undergrad training in math (in particular no real analysis and no differential equations). I just didn’t realize I wanted to do a PhD (was planning on going into industry) until my junior year so there wasn’t much time to take more math classes.
Being familiar with statistical computer programming (e.g. SAS or Stata) also would have made the first year in my program easier.
