Strategy PhD Profile
Hey everyone,
Just joined after finding this site a few days ago. Browsed threads back to page 35 before stopping for the night! Thanks to all the contributors - there's lots of good stuff here. I'm finishing up my MBA this summer at a small, local school (UNC Charlotte - there's several members on this board from UNCC that I've seen) and over the last three weeks have started thinking about pursuing a PhD (or DBA). If anyone would be able to take a look at my profile and tell me what areas I need to improve, I would be very appreciative.
Undergrad Degree: Electrical Engineering at Virginia Tech (top 10 EE program), 3.54 GPA, top 20% of class
Grad Degree: MBA at UNC Charlotte, 3.93 GPA (only B was in Finance)
Work Experience: 3 years in engineering, writing signal processing code in C/C++/MATLAB
GMAT: 750 overall (98%) with 48Q (84%); I took this test only once, with 24 hours preparation, due to last minute application to MBA program. If necessary, I believe I could score higher on Quant section. I haven't taken the GRE.
Math Background: Standard engineering undergrad stuff - Calc I/II, Multi-variable, linear algebra, differential equations, highest level course I took was Vector/Complex Analysis (which I used frequently in Electromagnetic Fields I/II). Grades averaged around a B+.
Research Experience: Nothing outside of class reports, though I've always loved doing research...I wrote my first 25-page research paper at age 11 just "for fun".
Recommendations: I'm very fortunate to have developed strong relationships with almost every faculty member I've met at UNCC, including almost the entire Management Dept (including the dept. head) and the Associate Dean of the business school (Belk), for whom I was a GA last fall. I have also maintained a relationship with an undergraduate professor who is probably the most award-winning faculty in the Virginia Tech EE department. I did an independent study with him my senior year on cognitive radios.
Basically I'm trying to gauge where my application time/money would be best used...top 10? (seems doubtful based on what I've read here), top 25? top 50? Is it realistic to apply this year, or would the lack of publications/theses/etc hurt me?
