are you sure that C is wrong.. and what is b/n in a.. I do not see b in the question.
@ Abhishek,

x^2 = 9==> x = +/- sqrt (9) = +/- 3

y^2 = (x^2)==> y = sqrt(x^2) =+/-x
sqrt (x^2) = +/- x

PS: keep in mind; when we take sqrt of anything there are two solutions(+ or -)!!
