First of all let me apologize for not giving the required information in detail(presuming that the embassy officials are handling the matter precisely). you and your colleagues can donate any money to the sri lankan pri ministers fund set up for this purpose
you can reach it through
http://www.emergencydonations.gov.lk/ . you surely can send ure cheque to the embassy and they will send it to the appropriate funds set up in sri lanka.(if ure not donating through ure credit card). in case u want further information i will be more than happy to provide you
