Re: Rejection from Brown
Hey everyone, been following the Econ Phd discussions from TM and US News for quite a while. I'm currently in the MSc at LSE, and from my experience, anyone who hasn't heard anything should definately NOT panic. One of my friends was accepted sometime around late February last year. I wasn't accepted until April 15th. Talk about a waiting period that drove me crazy! Not sure why things like that happen here, but I do know that deadlines for applications are less strict here compared with the US Phd programs.
Good to luck to all as next week sounds like it will be a crazy one for us all! mdl |

I understand that this is a personal question so it is fine if you don't want to answer it, but how do you manage with all these expenses? thanx, gstergia

Well, it's only a semi-personal question in that everyone here is immediately applying any knowledge they gain in economics to survive financially through the year! Coming from the States, I used the Stafford Loan, then added some undergraduate scholoarships I received and parents help (which I need to pay back, hopefully at the same interest rate as the US: about 0%!) and am barely scrapping by. Personally, I put aside money for tuition and housing first and then budgeted around 10 pounds a day for food/laundry(every few weeks)/transportation(I walk to uni, so that helps). I think most things here cost about the same price as they do at home, just in pounds...so about twice as expensive. It's a new version of "poor student" that I apparently missed as an undergrad (read: no $5 dollar, 15-inch college-town pizza joints!)...however, the year out here has been amazing and I wouldn't trade it for the world. And I'm pretty confident the education will pay for itself. Some people are in a similar situation as I am, but a lot of people are getting funding from the ESRC (for EU/UK students) and others have funding from banks in their home country (i.e. Bank of England, Bank of Spain). Obviously everyone's situation here is unique and I hope its been some help as you look towards next year. Good luck on the app to LSE and all the others! mdl |
