The realm of the president is beyond my understanding!!!
I feel your confusion . Gstergia has applied to 7 top non-US Econ MSc programs as an intermediate step towards top econ PhD programs, mainly Stanford and Princeton.

I second that (as ECON would say) but/and I hope after ECON enrolls to a "big five" PhD program that I will have more information to choose a good program not only by "name".

I've been at ubc for a year as an exchange student. I applied to Queen's and
UOT, but not to UBC. I am not trying to say that UBC is worse. From the econ graduate student I heard that they inclined to choose one of the other schools when they got into both. It seemed like canadians have different viewpoint in terms of rankings among them.
Anyway, Congratulations! I also applied to LSE EME. So many coincidence~
wish you more luck!

Re: In at U.British Columbia MA Econ

gsteria,

I've applied to UBC (accepted), U. of Toronto, McGill, LSE (1st choice: Econ, rejected online, second program: Econ History pending) Oxford, and UCL.

I heard same as you, by email, so did a friend of mine who is also in at LSE Finance/Economics.

I've done some research in behavioral economics and game theory, but I alo want to do trade/macro, trying to find a way to combine the two in a way that makes sense and is good economics, but don't know if that is possible yet.

As far as admition to UoT, they are a bit more selective, even if the program isn't ranked as highly, they are real sticklers on grades, and as such I don't think I have a great shot of getting in there.

For me, I am not sure I want to do a Phd, in fact I am pretty sure I do not, so the economics rankings are less important than if people have heard of the school I get my degree from. UBC is up and coming in Canada and the academic community but I do not know if it will ever be well-known in the US.

In terms of quality of life though, I have been to UBC and Queens, and UBC is MUCH NICER. Like, not even close, Queens is in a medium sized town called Kingston which revolves around the school and is a very insular environment with no 'real world'.

UBC is near vancouver and is one of the nicest places in the world, the campus is supposed to be absolutely gorgeous and it's proximity to a real, international city gives it life.

Now I don't know about University of Toronto, because that is smack in the middle of Toronto, which has it's pluses and minuses, but I think UBC trumps Queens on all counts (rankings matter if you want to go to Stanford).
