Re: In at Goldman School of Public Policy, UC Berkeley
Thank you scheng75! It's a MPP program.
Yes, I am interested in Economics, too. And I am wondering if I go to Berkeley or LSE, which offered me an admission to a MSc in Econ program. |

Hmmm...tough choices. I applied to Econ Ph.D but am now considering Policy field too. You can ask vinnythepooh since he's at LSE finishing his MSc in Econ. His website is http://www.vinayak.com/
Good luck and congrats on LSE as well!

Re: In at Goldman School of Public Policy, UC Berkeley
Tha's great news policy econ! I have two questions: First, do you have a MA in econ already, and where did you do your undergrad? I don't mean to be intrusive, but I think that your background would certainly be helpful to those who might be thinking of going that route as an option (myself included). I've heard great things about both UCB's and UCLA's MPP programs--so kudos to you!

Re: In at Goldman School of Public Policy, UC Berkeley
HetEcon--NO, I don't have a MA in econ. I am doing a BA at a small liberal arts college.
Probably I could win their admissions because of my unique background, besides my GPA and GRE score, especially for Berkeley's MPP. My workexperience as private secreatary for Japanese congressman, for example, really made me understood what's goin on in the Diet and Japanese politics. There, I had opportunities to research and prepare to write questions for my boss who then preseted them in the Committee of Finance where he served as the director. I was able to see the role of political parties and governments and how they interact with each other in the process of formulating policies. I also realized the great influence a single person could make--because my research result, which was presented in the committee, could affect the millions of people's lives as imput to teh new policy formulating. I believe, to get in the schools like berkeley, one really should be unique or distinctive in some ways because almost every applicant's GRE score and GPA are good. Admissions committee simply don't get impressed by such things. So we have to make every effort to make ourselves distinctive from other applicants. Great references, especially from people who really know you in detail, for instance. In fields like Economics, it might be your articles published. Or some critical and original thinking. In public policy programs, it would be your work experiences. I maybe wrote too much. I hope it helped a little bit for those who will be applying next year and following. Yay, I will be enjoying my spring break which starts today!! I will go visit SF and UC Berkeley. Have a good spring break HetEcon! |

Re: In at Goldman School of Public Policy, UC Berkeley
Thanks PolicyEcon, your experience is very inspirational and it is sure to help many future applicants.
Have fun in SF and if you go to the Fisherman's Wharf (I know it's touristy), make sure to eat at the Crab House. Despite the fact that the prices are a bit high, the seafood is well worth it (especially the crab!)! And for anyone else that might be traveling out that way, stay in South San Francisco by the airport. The prices are a lot cheaper and you are still only minutes away from San Francisco (SF State, UCSF), Oakland (UCB), and many other spots (driving distance to Stanford, UCSC, and more). Most importantly, to PolicyEcon, ENJOY YOUR SPRING BREAK!!!! ![]()
