Re: Maryland College Park
Having read your list of mathematical courses I concluded you are from Russia because Russian universities usually offer many theoretical courses like these. Still, congratulations on your admit!
I was also admitted to Univ. of Rochester, Institute of Optics. Have you been admitted to the Dept. of Physics? |

Re: Maryland College Park
Yes I was admitted to the Department of Physics I was on the visiting weekend as well. I really enjoyed it, the department was really generous and I could speak to many intelligent people. I think really highly of Rochester physics it is an excellent department. But right now the nonlinear dynamics program and maybe gravitation theory at Maryland is much more attractive
.Not all of the mathematics courses were in the physics curriculum I started a major in mathematics as well. However I could not finish because I graduated in physics much earlier. In my university taking a major means 24 hours a week just in lectures and recitations. |

Re: Maryland College Park
I have heard that MPIT (or something like that) is very good (best(?)) university in Russia for Physics. Is Russian programs more rigorous than US counterparts. And I have one question for all ... if we do not consider the language barrier, are Russian programs better than US programs (No intension of starting a Cold War here

Re: Maryland College Park
I don't know how strong it is now but all Easter European science programs were excellent in the past. (I am afraid that it is much weaker now) And one of the reasons is that the curriculum was designed for a much narrover layer of the society. Only 10 percent of the population had college degree so the expectations and the difficulty was considerably higher than it is now. I learned according to the old curriculum and in my opinion it was strenuous. I studied Lebesgue integral in the second semester and measure theory in the third, 6 hours per week just for analysis for 2.5 years.
Sonething to add: There are brilliant people everywhere and the fact that I had a strong undergrad education does not help me when I have to compete with more gifted scientists. Last edited by Peter137 : 03-12-2005 at 04:40 PM. |

Re: Maryland College Park
Peter137, gratulacje! felicitari! blahozelania! cestitam ti!
(was I lucky this time?)Btw, I'm also not from Russia... also a bit to the West ![]() Quote:
Of course, it is difficult for me to make comparisons without studying in the US ... What is true is that high school in Russia (and former Soviet Union in general) is better than in the US. For example, most (maybe even all) material needed for GRE Quantitative section is studied here in High School, not in University. The undergraduate university cirriculum is probably also broader (many courses which are taught at graduate level in american universities are taught here to undergraduates). As for quality of these courses ... it depends on the university, I think. Some universities here are not so good as they used to be in Soviet times, but still the level often remains high. I think the education here is distinguished by fundamental approach, i.e. you must fully understand the general theory before you go on to applications. I suppose this is different from american approach, which is more biased towards applications. Of course, this is only my personal opinion which is not supported by the experience of studying in America, so I can be wrong on some points... |
