Re: Answers about Yale...(Econ that is)
Hi floplo:
first a big thank u for ur generous help!!! actually i've decided to come to yale as well, so i'll see u both in august!! am a bit worried about my poor maths background tho...am thinking of teaching myself some more maths during summer... particularly topics in multivariate calculus and linear algebra do u guys have any fine textbooks to recommend?? thank you!!! and to floplo: would it be completely inappropriate if i asked u for the course syllubus u had in ur 1st year? :o just textbooks part will do... have heard about the "1st year qualifying test in yale" ..think i'd better start early for im probably the one with the least background in economics~~ and i just got an email from the registrar who said the city of new haven has an "unjustifiably bad reputation".. what is it?? |

Re: Answers about Yale...(Econ that is)
Hi dyxdyx,
great to hear about your choice for Yale. I will get back to you about the Syllabus in a day or two (a little bit busy right now) (you can send me a private message with your e-mail address, might be easier) Don't worry too much about your Math background... ;-) The exams at the end of the year (officially called "Comprehensive Exams", usually just "Comps") pretty much cover exactly what you will do during your first year here, so an extensive background is not necessarily necessary (each prof has its own style, and if your undergrad profs teach it different, it may help you to get started on a topic, but in the end the differences will be negligible) and well, yes , the reputation of New Haven is not necessarily the best (regarding crime, urban deterioration, etc), but the city really had a revival in the last decade (low crime, urban renewal, much more shops, bars and restaurants, more culture, etc) |

Hello floplo,
thanks a lot for your help! It would be really great if you can give me any input about the MA Program in International and Development Economics at Yale. |

The IDE program has a core curriculum which is specifically designed for MA students, but they also have the option to take PhD courses as electives. Not too many to do, since the program is more policy oriented and abstract phd courses do not fit too well. Also IDE students make use of the broad range of options from other departments (IR, Forestry, etc). The faculty for the IDE program is partly only teaching there and partly also teaching in the Phd program. However even if a faculty member is not teaching in the IDE program, he or she is usually accessible if a student is interested. I actually can't really tell much about the careers of IDE students, most of which are foreign and often return to their home country after the degree. I know of one case where one got into the PhD at Yale, but I doubt that an academic career is very common. If you want to know something else, let me know |
