Univ. of Washington at Seattle! PhD in Accounting

A very good friend of mine (and former PhD collegue) has received an offer from Univ. of Washington at Seattle for PhD in Accounting. They offered him the "complete package"! (tuition waiver and stipend! )
I am in the process of introducing/inducing my friend to TM. He will soon get addicted to it like me!

Univ. of Washington at Seattle is ranked 6th based on publications in accounting journals. http://citm.utdallas.edu/utdrankings/rankingbydate.aspx

(I hope you guys do not think that it is pathetic that I have no admit news yet and that I post about other people's admits, right? :o )

You are a generous guy, Prez. We always knew that. But somehow you make TM sound like a crack habit.

No!!! (or yes !!!) I love TM !!! I have to visit it at least 5 times per day and check any news! I have friends in TM and it is a whole community to me, my e-community. On the other hand, I have to post, I have to!!! Sometimes just for the shake of posting but also to express my view, argue in "controversial" threads, share the agony and excitement of admits and comfort people about rejects etc. It thrills me! (if you know what I mean )

Re: Univ. of Washington at Seattle! PhD in Accounting

Don't know much about the careers of those who hold a Ph.D in Accounting, I guess they can work for the big accounting firms. I believe Ph.D in Finance is the more highly paid since that's where the money is. I think they can easily make over $120K. I don't think the Marketing field pay that well, unless the person also has some incredible sales abilities. Don't know much about the last two fields.

Re: Univ. of Washington at Seattle! PhD in Accounting

The high salaries for PhD in Accounting has more to do with the plethora of accounting programs in US Univs. There are all kinds of programs that include courses in accounting: MSc programs, MBA programs, Executive programs/seminars etc. Accounting has become a "must" course in every Business program either it is undergrad, MBA or PhD.
The strange thing is that when I was doing my PhD in Strategy (Business Administration) my friend in the PhD in Accounting had to take way more economics courses than I had to take!

Marketing Phd can make a huge money coz they can be consultants to big companies while Accounting Phd can do research in the areas like IO and corporate governance. Of coz, both can be professors of the MBA programs!

Re: Univ. of Washington at Seattle! PhD in Accounting

I second hoper's thoughts. The people I knew in the Accounting Dept were doing research in corporate governance (with game-theoretic models) and information economics (!) . If I had to choose one of the above Business PhDs I would probably choose Marketing (heavy IO and Game Theory , NOT the behavioral one with consumer behaviour etc) and if I were given a second choice Accounting (!) . It may sound weird but Strategy/Organizational Behaviour do not suit me at all and I don't know what Supply Chain Management is but I suspect it involves a lot of Operations Research which I don't like. As for Finance, hm... I don't know but it seems too "specialized" for my interests.
