Accepted at Ann Arbor,Austin,Tamu---(confused)
Dear All
Just came to know about this wonderful forum and unfortunately in my very first mail I am asking for help. About myself am a mech MS applicant(inclination towards thermal and flud sciences and propulsion)with the following credentials GRE 1450;TOEFL 287;GPA 8.52;Working with R&D center of a German Mech. Giant for past two years and currently in germany. I have got an acceptance from High Ones:- Michi. ann arbor TAMU Austin Safe Bets:- Boulder Michi Tech Clemson Houston but confused where to go,i have an experience and inclination towards thermal and fluid sciences. Please can anyone help me out from my first lot, although financial back up is not a problem but,but the huge difference(cost) in Tamu and Ann arbor plus an excellent turbo group at TAMU is bending me towards TAMU(even when ann arbor is top 5).Also austin is great in Energy,Thermal and Fluid sciences. Your comments will be extremely helpful. Thanks and Regards Mosel |

I bet Ann Arbor is a decent place to go

Hmm...I think I'd go with UT-Austin. Austin's ME department is pretty reputed (my friend's friend who is a ME from Austin recently got admitted to MIT).

I would suggest emailing the grad students from all three in order to get a better idea. I've emailed the grad students from my three prospective schools and have gotten some very helpful information.
Good luck!

Re: Accepted at Ann Arbor,Austin,Tamu---(confused)
Thanks Gforce & Scheng75,
I think mailing grad students for a feedback is a very good suggestion Scheng. Gforce I have a friend at Austin too, pursuing his doctorate and he is the one who is strongly encouraging me to go for ann arbor. The problem is that if I had to compare only mech departments It was plain and simple that is ann arbor, but as there are no clear cut individual rankings on thermal and fluid sciences it has become a big problem for me.I have gone through each of the universities internet sites but have not found any decisive factor, considering thermal and fluid sciences, propulsion as a criteria for selection. The major criterion i am considering are:- 1)Strength of research according to my interests(the most imp. criteria) 2)Overall Ranking of Mech Department 3)Location 4)Cost Now if i consider the first criteria,i have been searching internet and have virtually been driven crazy but have not yet found a single decisive factor. The sum of the rest three criterian also I think lands all universities at the same place. Regards Mosel |
