.... you should call them now and ask; NOW!!! If there is a tuition waiver involved, then 9-12k pounds for living costs, is an amount that you want to consider given UCL's excellent reputation, eh???? (don't say NO without asking first, please!) Please clarrify if it is: Cost (UCL with waiver) < = min{Cost (UPF), Cost (UBC)} ? |

I honestly do not believe that a tuition waiver will be involved but I will send them an e-mail. Check the UCL MSc Econ courses http://www.econ.ucl.ac.uk/index.php. I mean no offense for people in the UCL MSc Econ but for my research interests and educational needs it simply cannot be compared to UPF MSc Econ. In UCL I will take Micro, Macro and Metrics (not metric spaces but econometrics) Game Theory and IO (both of which are of suspicious theoretical content, maybe they will be "applied" versions). NO Micro II, no Game Theory II not No 2 versions of basic courses. Furthemore I can now honestly say that I dislike London. I feel miserable in London because: 1) my money will never be enough 2) I feel that I'm exploid since I was paying for the same things less both in NY and in Greece (and in other countries that I have traveled to).

:In the first term (late September to December) all students take a common core of three courses, in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, and Econometric Theory and Methods. In the second term (January to March) each student four further courses from a range of options. The options available vary from year to year, depending on staff interests and availability, but normally include Game Theory, Advanced Macroeconomic Theory, Microeconometrics, Time Series Econometrics, Public Microeconomics, Topics in Industrial Organisation, Topics in Labour Economics, Economics of Government and Regulation, Topics in Environmental and Resource Analysis, Topics in Applied Microeconomics. Further details of the topics offered in the current year can be fount in the current year programme outline . so, hypothetically speaking, you can take micro, macro, econ in the first semester and then game theory, microeconometrics, IO, advance macro ![]() But, yes, I should admit it: I like more UPF's program, not to mention UoT's prelim math camp . In any case, wait for their answer regarding tuition and we will debate again ![]() |

Re: In at Univ. College London MSc Econ (no tuition?)
Hello
I´m a brazilian student looking for a strong master program in order to prepare myself for a good PhD in economics or to find out that this is not what I want... I would really want you guys to help me out on this... Brief profile: BA in Economics in a top brazilian school, good gpa (regular undergrad math and econometrics plus real analysis and linear algebra) Some RA in papers that were published in internationally recognized journals GRE: 800 Q 490 V TOEFL: 270 LOR: from unknown professors who said good things about me... I have been accepted at Pompeu Fabra´s MSc and I´m waiting on UCL and St.Gallen (MiQE/F), and I only applied those places... Can anyone give me another option or compare UPF and UCL in case I get accepted in both??? |

I'd prefer UCL, because its MSc program is more comprehensive (and probably advanced) than LSE. I cannot make a comparison with Pompeu Fabra though. In UCL, you will have an opportunity to take 4 advanced electives in the second term. Moreover, you may take elective courses from London Business School for free (LBS offers excellent dynamic programming and optimization courses). The MSc program is not crowded when compared to LSE. If you look at the research interests of the faculty, you will see that there is a "UCL approach". They specialize in Applied Micro, Applied Economic Analysis and Microeconometric Theory. However, they also like to study micro-founded macro. They push PhD students towards being multi-disciplinary. At the end, you can graduate with research interest micro, macro and econometrics. They are able to gather micro, macro and econometrics in one research paper (which is my dream). For instance, Dr. Jerome Adda have written a Dynamic Programming book together with Russell Cooper. It is an excellent macro textbook and started to dominate Stokey&Lucas and Sargent&Ljungqvist. Nobu Kiyotaki gives it as the primary textbook in his latest syllabus at LSE. In fact, Jerome Adda is a Applied Micro guy. Their macro approach is unique and if you wish, you can even study RBC and dynamic macro. As a result, personally, I have enough reasons to love UCL. But, you have your own facts. ps: I'm going to Minnesota . I dont want to talk about the offer upgrade. I think it is not ethical to offer extra money to snap up students. I turned it down yesterday. I feel good and relaxed.Best Klimano |
