Many professors are very helpful and an Independent Study is an excellent way to do this. Unfortunately, I did not publish anything as an undergrad, and I think that hurt my chances a little at schools such as UCB, Stanford, and UCSD. Have fun! In my experience, GRE has little importance for top schools. Also, research experience is, in general, more important than an industry internship.
