Advice to those applying to grad school: Try to get a research position as soon as possible and try to get something published. Many professors are very helpful and an Independent Study is an excellent way to do this. Unfortunately, I did not publish anything as an undergrad, and I think that hurt my chances a little at schools such as UCB, Stanford, and UCSD. Have fun!

Published (y/n & # of articles): n; one conference paper, based on my MA thesis (but after applications!)

Other: extensive language knowledge and one year of teaching experience.

Advice to those applying to grad school: if you can send in a writing sample, do so, and make sure it's the right one; work hard on your SOP and get loads of feedback from professors on it; instruct your recommenders esp. if they are unfamiliar with the US system; study hard for the standardized tests; try to get something published, or at least a couple of conference papers when you're aiming for a PhD; MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU WANT, know your strengths and weaknesses and don't be too shy to sell yourself! And definitely make sure your selection of universities is varied!

Advice to those applying to grad school:

- The PhD is a research degree, and all serious research students do undergraduate research these days. Try to publish.

- Apply to many fellowship programs. See my site for my list.

- Check my site for the latest tips: :) http://lemaymd.com/main.php?frag=school&title=School

- Don't just play the ratings game when choosing a school. In my case, I ended up picking the top-ranked school that accepted me, but I visited each to scope out possible advisors. The student-advisor relationship is the most important during the PhD process.

- Read books on how to succeed at a PhD program. Don't learn the hard way. Check my site for my latest picks.

Accepted Schools (aid: y/n and how much and what form):

- UMN-Twin Cities (2-yr fellowship)

- UW-Madison (1-yr fellowship)

- University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (20-hour TA)

Rejected Schools: MIT

Schools I Rejected: (before decision was made) Iowa State

Accepted Fellowships:

- National Physical Sciences Consortium (http://www.npsc.org)

- National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship (http://www.asee.org/resources/fellowships/ndseg/winners2005.cfm)

Rejected Fellowships:

- Hertz Foundation (BOMBED my interview with a physicist. If you go for this fellowship, study up on topics in calculus, [there's always a Newton's method or Taylor series problem] physics and chemistry!)

- National Science Foundation (research interests not focused enough, didn't adequately address "broader impacts" section)

Chosen Fellowship:

- National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship

Advice to those applying to grad school: Know what you want to do before you apply. Don't apply to grad school just because you feel you should, or because you're getting pressured by familiy or professors. I worked in the real world for 3 years before going on to grad school, and it was one of the best decisions I could have made.

Advice to those applying to grad school: Recommendations are hugely important. Give you SOP to your recommenders so they can see which parts of your profile you're stressing. Hopefully they'll stress the same stuff, and the overall picture become stronger/more coherent when your application is reviewed. Other than that, just general stuff - be honest, start early, think long and hard about why you're applying - it'll help, both in making your appllication more sincere and in your decision making for your career and life in general

Advice to those applying to grad school:

Try to participate in some research with professors or get some working experience in the industry, which will make your SOP more impressive. If you get low GRE score, don't be too disappointed, your good GPA and distinguished SOP still can help you get into good schools.

Texas Tech University (aid is still being discussed)

Brown University (RA)
