Help, Applied to 9 universities - PhD in CS, heard from 7, just 1 acceptance - NCSU

Hi guys,

I need some serious help at this point. I am a Graduate (MS) student in CS dept of SUNY Albany. I applied for PhD in CS for Fall 06 in the following schools :

1. CMU
2. COrnell
3. University of Minnesota
4. NCSU - Raleigh
5. RPI
6. University of Illinois - Chicago
7. University of MA - Amherst
8. OSU
9. University of California - Irvine

Of all these the top 7 have intimated me abt the decision. just got an admit at NCSU, they are still takiing a decision on funding for me.

I want to do PhD at any cost. I was so depressed that i have all of a sudden started thinking of a job, if nothing goes well, but a break is what i hate.

How do you guys rate CS in NCSU, if my research interest is AI, Machine Learning and Data Mining

have you heard from UMinnesota yet?

All your universities are tough to crack for a PhD.
Did you get rejected by UIC? (If yes, it would surprise me).

I donot know abt the NCSU Machine learning group though....

I can understand how you feel... one admit, and no aid in that one... I must admit that I do have a few more schools still in the pipeline...

As far as NCSU is concerned, I wouldn't really know about how good they are in your fields of interest, but otherwise its a pretty good school, and ranked 35 for Computer Engineering by USNews... if they give you aid, you should definitely consider it if the two remaining schools don't work out...

bealdia, I must say Congratulations, because you got into a school! NCSU isn't a bad school, and you made it out of 700 applicants! I applied to 12 PhD programs and got into none, so you are in a much better situation

Right now I have no choice but to get a job. Working for one or two years isn't bad if it's a research job and it should also help you to get into a better school next time (especially if you publish papers while working).

Hi,

My Current GPA : 3.69/4.0
Out of the 9 univs that i mentioned in order, i heard from the first 7, UCI and OSU still left to notify me about their decisions.

I am working on a research project on Data Mining.

The current semester is my 4th sem of MS at SUNY Albany, Of the 4 sems, I have been a Teaching Assistant for 3 sems.

GRE : 1290/1600
TOEFL : 273/300

Dont even know how OSU and UCI would respond
