Likely, but not necessarily... I have 7 decisions pending, and I know that two have just sent their decisions and two are still to take them, so there are still places... then again, they're most likely going to be rejects, or at the most, admits without aid, which is again a reject when you think about it...

M/F: F Location when applying: Brussels, Belgium Major(s) in undergrad: Translation English - Italian - Modern Greek Undergraduate institution: Totally unknown, even within Belgium! Major(s) applying for: Comparative Literature Area of specialization: American - Italian - French Literature Degree(s) earned: Licence Translation; Master in International Business; MA in American Studies Degree(s) applying for: PhD Undergrad GPA (try to adjust to 4.0 system): 70% (cum laude) Class Rank (if applicable): no clue GRE Verbal: 640 GRE Math: 700 GRE Writing: 5.5 How many months did you study for GRE general: I took it twice; the first time I studied about 1 month, but I was also working full-time, the second time, more or less the same. GRE Subject (if applicable): I'm glad I didn't take it! How many months did you study for GRE subject: / Researched as undergrad in University (y/n & years): N/A Researched as undergrad in Industry (y/n & years): N/A Published (y/n & # of articles): 1 article published; 2 presented in conferences Other: 2 years of teaching experience in BA and adult education (English and Italian) Advice to those applying to grad school: Spend a lot of time selecting the universities you will apply to, go through loads of department websites and make sure you end up with a good mix of schools. Apply to as many universities as you can afford, you won't be sorry because there is no way to predict your chances. Work hard on all aspects of your file, but especially on your SOP if you're aiming at high-ranked universities, and GRE for a lot of unis ranked 30-100. Contact some professors you'd really like to work with if you have anything interesting to tell them. Keep records of everything you do, make an excel sheet or something with the info you need for every school. Good luck! Help others who are in the same boat, a little positive karma goes a long way! Accepted Schools (aid: y/n and how much and what form; date notified and method of notification): Brown (full funding until I finish); UMich (full funding); IndianaU-Bloomington (no $); UWashington-Seattle (no $); UNC (I declined the funding interview because I had already decided to go to Brown) Rejected Schools (date notified and method of notification): UMN, Yale, Harvard, UPenn, Cornell, UOregon (this was my safe school, actually...), Berkeley, Northwestern, UWisconsin-Madison Waitlisted Schools: Emory, Johns Hopkins (not officially, but I haven't heard from them and they admitted some students months ago, so I presume I'm on an unofficial waitlist and will receive a rejection letter soon.) Chosen School: Brown

Economics PhD
Age:28
M/F: F Location when applying: Rome, Italy Major(s) in undergrad: Business Administration Undergraduate institution: small unknown liberal arts college Major(s) applying for: Economics Area of specialization: Macroeconomics, Monetary, International econ Degree(s) earned: BA Degree(s) applying for: PhD Undergrad GPA (try to adjust to 4.0 system): 3.69 Class Rank (if applicable): don’t know GRE Verbal: 1st time:460; 2nd time:540 GRE Math: 1st time:740; 2nd time:710 GRE Writing: 1st time:4.0; 2nd time:3.5 How many months did you study for GRE general: the first time I didn’t study a lot, I was still in school taking 5 classes and time was scarce so I studied a bit over the week ends. The second time I did a lot more since I had more time (I was working at the time). So, I studied for 2 months an average of two hours per day, but preparing only the math section. Yes, look at my scores ... I do believe this damn test is absolutely worthless! GRE Subject (if applicable): How many months did you study for GRE subject: Researched as undergrad in University (y/n & years): Researched as undergrad in Industry (y/n & years): One year. I was a research assistant in the economics department for a U.N. agency Published (y/n & # of articles): no, nothing. Other: several years of math and science tutoring mostly at high school level, but did some at undergraduate level too. Received a scholarship for my last undergrad year and was given an award of academic excellence in Finance and Accounting. Advice to those applying to grad school:Carefully research school, you will want to apply to those were your research interests match those of the faculty; this is extremely important! Apply to as many schools as time and money permits, admission decisions are too random to be predictable. Do not apply only to top 10 schools, there are far too many smart and dedicated people around then spots available, you are allowed to dream but don’t forget to be practical too. Give yourself A LOT of time to write your sop, it is an important part of the application and you will want to be very much focused on research and career goals which might not be that easy. I spent 2.5 months and countless revisions on it. Get close to professors as much as you can, the more they know about you the better their lors will be. If you have the luck of being in a big research university volunteer to help out one of your profs with his/her research over the summer between your junior and senior year; it will give you an insight of what research is, something to write about in your sop, and you will be better known by at least one prof. One last thing: start the process as early as you can not only because it is really time consuming but also because if you do so you can contact profs at the schools you are thinking of applying to. To get in touch with profs is a smart idea to have some sort of advantage over the other candidates, but you need to do it early on (i.e. over the summer) because if you do it around October/November it might seem you are doing it only for the admissions process and not because you are seriously interested. Accepted Schools (aid: y/n and how much and what form; date notified and method of notification):University of Iowa, PhD (full aid in the form of fellowship + TA/RA, notified via e-mail on March 8th) SUNY at Binghamton, PhD (no aid, notified via web site around March 20) Boston University, MA (no aid, notified via e-mail on March 28) Rejected Schools (date notified and method of notification): Georgetown Uni (letter) George Washington Uni (letter) U. of Virginia (e-mail) U. of Rochester (e-mail) Rutgers (letter) Purdue (web site) Waitlisted Schools:IndianaUniversity, JohnsHopkinsUniversity, TempleUniversity. Well, I don’t know whether I was waitlisted at these schools, but I still haven’t heard anything from them. At this point they will all be rejects I think. ChosenSchool: Do you need to ask?! U. of Iowa of course!!
