UVa Vs Vanderbilt CS Ph.D.

Last week I mailed a Prof at Vanderbilt askig him what happened to my application to Vanderbilt and replied that they have admitted me and given RA as well. ..now I am wondering which will be a better option ..

Vanderbilt

Pros :-
Know the work
and th people ....I have been working on a research project with them for past 1.5 year ....

Cons :-
Not very well ranked...although I am surpised why.....if you go by the rankings ..i think its 50+..

Virginia
Better Ranked ....( 30th or so ....)
A few good people .and research I am interested in .John Knight and Jon Stankovic....amongst them ....

Cons :
Dont know much about the people ....from anywhere else other than the website....that is I have not interacted with them much...

I have RA from both the places .....

From what I know, Vanderbilt is a very nice place and the CS dept is very good. The dept is small and therefore the ranking is low (since research output, funding etc will be lesser for a smaller dept), other than that the dept is excellent. So, if you really like working with the people you know at Vanderbilt, ranking should not deter you from doing your PhD there.
Virginia is also a very strong dept.
Congratulations on 2 very good admits!

bilash is almost a TestMagic guru.
As far as I know UVA is considered one of the best public universities in the US (probably ranked 3rd or 4th among all public universities). The CS department is known to be very hard to get in. I don't know much about Vanderbilt, but I would definitely choose UVA!
