Please help me decide!!

Hello,
I have been admitted to the CS PhD program at UMich with a fellowship(full waiver + $22800 p.a stipend) and MS CS in Gatech(no aid). I know that both univs are good. but I feel gatech is mariginally better, i may be wrong in saying mariginally, please correct me if i am wrong. I want to do a PhD ultimately. Where do u think I should go. My interests are in Theory(heard gatech is very good). But the only problem is gatech is a little expensive, though I feel I should be able to manage somehow. but is it worth it to miss a good fellowship offer from a college almost ranked equally? Please help me take a decision soon.

IF u have the money to spare initially ( for a sem ta max) u can go ahead, Umich is good for AI, I dont know how good it is for theory, but wat i know it is hitty 'COLD'

the difference in the quality of the programs is small. and receiving aid is makes a huge difference. in your situation, i would prefer michigan by a large margin.

go where the money is; you'll be much happier in the end. (unless, of course, you're so rich that $100k is peanuts. I don't know, some of the people here must be)

@ Whyworrin,

If it was for AI, I would have suggested UMich because if you look at their website and the areas in which their professors are working, you will know what I mean.

But generally, Umich is not a great school for CS. Dont always go by the rankings. Umich may be in top 10 but it isint that great for CS. Say for example UCSD which is many times better than UMich is not in top 10. So, rankings always doesnt reflect the real picture.

GaTech is absolutely amazing for CS. It's actually it's own school over there instead of being just a department. Its way better than UMich for Computer Science any day.

But money is also a factor. So, do consider that also.
Its a tough choice because of the aid given by UMich.

Bottomline :-

If money is not a factor, then choose GaTech.
If money is a factor, then choose UMIch.
That answers your question .

umich is ranked 15, ucsd is ranked 13, and gatech is ranked 11. the usnews rankings are based solely on surveys sent to professors in each dept.
