I have also been able to secure admission in University of Southern California,Los Angeles for MS in Comp Science Fall 2003.I want to know how is this school and since i have also been accepted by Florida Institute of Technology for the same program,I should go to which school. one problem with USC is that it is very expensive. They have asked me to show about $32,750 so that they could process my I-20.
I would like to know what is the procedure of getting financial aid ? Albeit I know that now a days it's difficult to get an aid but still i want to try.Should I contact the profs individually requesting them for assistantship? |

Hi gupta_v,
I dont know much of details. But I think rankwise University of Southern California,Los Angeles is better than FIT. For CS, the former's rank is 27(from Usnews). U can go to http://lazowska.cs.washington.edu/usnews2003/cs.htm . Thanks Ruby |

There's another post around here about FIT. I think we said that the school wasn't too highly ranked.
I know USC is expensive, but it has a great reputation overall, and seems to have risen in rankings in the last few years. Quote:

Thanks Ruby and Erin for their replies.I want to know what is the procedure for getting financial aid for International applicants.Actually it would not be possible for me to show so much of money from my sponsors as of now. So I would most probably be going to Florida Institute of Technology. Is it possible to transfer later from one University to other easily if you already have secured admission in the other university.
Thanks. |

Gupta u can definetely change Univs after coming to the US. But the thing is u need to get an I 20 from them for this semester and then ask them to defer it for the next sem. Since, they asked for that gigantic amount to just issue ur I 20, I guess, if u wanna attend USC at some point in the future u gotta arrange that money and get a bank statement. As far as assistantships go, its similiar to applying for jobs. U apply with ur CV and a cover letter and then if the dept is interested they'll contact u and interview u and then offer/reject!!. This is the most generic method.

Hi Gupta,
If you still have doubts picking the school, you should go visit the campus itself. I have not been to FIT, but I have been to USC, and I think the campus is one of the prettier ones I've been to(I have visited about 10 Universities), although you should be aware that the location of USC is not that safe(outside the campus). USC has been known to be VERY generous in giving out aids to students. If you actually look at their fundings, it is very high for a small-mid size university. That's my 2 cents. Good luck! ![]() Gop |

How tough is it to get into USC? Whats your gpa like? Do u have any publications etc.? The reason i'm asking is because i have a friend who got in for fall 2003 as well and he said that the acceptance rate is quite high at USC. I have no idea how far this is true.
