Advice: Cdn success, holding out... ...?
Hi. Newbie here. Pleased to make your acquaintances.
I've applied for economics M.A. programs in three universities in Canada: UBC, Toronto, and Queen's. Queen's has recently gone through and offered a handsome scholarship + TAship package (~$18,000 CAD), so I'm definitely going to some school this September. But they require a response by March 7. I'm still hoping for some word from Toronto, though, so I'm wondering when do they usually make decisions for applicants?Of course, being from UBC myself, I know their program is probably the best in Canada, but I do kind of want to step out for a bit, and their formal deadline is March 1, so I have doubts as to whether they'll be able to reply by March 7. So Toronto is the real lynchpin, and right now I'm starting to go bananas waiting for their response: some reassuring words on how long I'd have to wait would be much appreciated. |

Hi, I think those who got admits from the UofT MA program last year, they heard from the department around mid March. There is a chance you won't hear from Toronto by March 7th. that is quite odd, March 7th seems so early. I think those who got Queen's admit also heard from them around March if I'm not mistaken.. maybe you got an "early acceptance" and requires an early decision? lol. i don't know. good luck.

When i applied last year, I received my offers in the following order:
UToronto Doctoral Stream - probably Mar 1? or late february. UBC - Mar.3 Queens - Mar. 13 ... but i had to call u of t for info on my status. It can't hurt to call and let them know that you've been offered funding elsewhere and need to know the status of your application. |

Yah I already informed them about the Queen's money via e-mail: they replied and said it'll take them "two weeks". I've been reading thegradcafe and I noticed that most doctoral stream acceptances should be around now. I think I might call UofT tomorrow to check, as well as to update that there's also an offer from UBC I have to deal with.
Deadlines are now Mar. 13 for UBC and Mar. 16 for Queen's. I think if I get into doctoral stream then I'll likely choose UofT, but if not, then they're probably not going to give me much in terms of money and UBC (the offer and the school) would be a better choice. From what I can tell reputationally UBC would be better, but not so much that I wouldn't benefit from leaving the alma mater for a year to try something new at UofT. Feel free to correct me, though, if my perception is wrong. PS: TBK, I was reading back on some of your posts and I realized that you went through almost the entirely same thing as I did (UT, UBC, QED apps, offers of money on the schools that accepted...). Funny world. So where'd you end up and what path are you going to take?Last edited by kelvinc : 03-01-2007 at 11:41 PM. |

I am at UBC right now. I absolutely love the school, though i hear very good things about Queens as well. This year didn't go as well as i had hoped (mostly because of slacking, and not working nearly as hard as I should have), and i am praying some school will take me for the PhD. The department is highly regarded, and the faculty have amazing contacts. I have had such a fun year. There is alot of comraderie among the MA students, and it isn't nearly as competitive as U of T (supposedly).

I e-mailed UofT about the Queen's offer on Feb. 24 and they got back on Feb. 26. I quote their very generic response:

Update: UofT sent an email saying I got into doctoral stream MA. No specifics on funding but the policy is that I get the same package as a PhD student would in first year.
This was kind of what I've been hoping for all along, but now I'm getting a bit of cold feet with the siren song of a decent UBC offer and the prospect of diving into the more difficult doctoral stream after a year out of school. (Yes I'm tough to please.) Thankfully I should have about a week to make a decision. |
