How about CS@Yale

Hey, guys. I know Yale is quite famous for its law school. How about its CS department? Just wondering whether it is worth to spend more than 5 years to obtain a PhD there...

What other schools are you planning to go to? If you are aiming for PhD and yale is the only option than go for it. But if you are comparing say, CMU to Yale then its a different story.

Thanks man. The other considerations are ECE at UIUC and CS at UCLA. What do you think about the choice? I dunno exactly what people in the States will choose if they face the same situation with me and what they think about these graduate programs. CS at Yale ranks top 20 and ECE at UIUC ranks top 5, but you know Yale is Yale. It is a bit difficult for me to make my decision. Hope you can help me out.

If you are planning to stay in the state then UCLA phd will probably get you more jobs after grad. If however, you plan on going to somewhere else, Yale name will get you better name brand recog. Of course, only amid laymens. Those in high tech industry will wonder why you didn't go to stanford or MIT instead of to Yale.

In general, if you are working in silicon valley, which school matters less than you think. Only if you go outside of US, you will get some recog. of Yale.

Thanks, dude. I just came back from a travel and saw your reply. Your suggestion is quite helpful for me. What if we move UCLA off the table and make a comparation between UIUC and Yale? Actually I dunno how companies and institutions treat UIUC graduates. Are they being regarded almost the same as, or just a little weaker than the ones from, say, MIT and Stanford?

By the way, have a nice weekend

Hey,

I go to an undergraduate institution in Illinois, and have also done a huge amount of research on grad schools, with their job prospects as well. Unfortunately, UCLA and Yale were not amongst my choices.

However, I can assure you that in terms of jobs UIUC is superb. All the big CS companies and a lot of other ones go there to recruit on campus. And the college itself it fairly nice as well.

I think it should come down to Yale (because, Yale is Yale) vs UIUC (it is as good as UCLA in terms of jobs and much better academically).

You haven't mentioned whether this is PhD or MS. My recommendation - for PhD go to Yale because after PhD most likely you'll go to academia, and for that Yale is Yale. For MS, go to UIUC because of jobs.

Frankly, even if you go to UIUC, if you truly want to go to where actions are in private sector - you either go to boston or the silicon valley in US. UIUC started Mosaic among other great achievement and its name is in par with UCLA and berkerly but due to geographic issue, silicon valley know UCLA and Berkerly more so than UIUC. On the other hand, Boston probably will treat them in the same level.

I agree with veron that once you get to PhD, you probably ended up in academia so the aforemention issue is a non-issue. Although given most CS PhD do ended up in the valley, you probably do need to take that into account. Like google founders ...

Also, I disagree that Yale is Yale as it is a very layman view of the world. Its like doing CS at Harvard while MIT is down the street. or political science at MIT. People in tech industry just blink when you are in a liberal art school doing tech stuff.

Of course for ppl outside of the US, ppl will ASSUME oxford should be good at CS as well just as they will ASSUME Princeton should also be good at engineering (humm, do they have an engineering dept?)

I think you are significantly simplifying the issue. While location is no doubt important, I think UIUC has a better rep than UCLA everywhere. UCLA isn't that close to the valley and most UIUC grads seem to head the coasts anyways. Also to be more specific about UIUC's achievements, according to wikipedia here are companies and technologies that have come out of UIUC and/or its alumni:

Netscape Communications, AMD, PayPal, Playboy, the National Football League, Siebel Systems, Mortal Kombat, YouTube, Oracle, Lotus, Yelp, BET, LED, integrated circuit, transistor, MRI, and Plasma

Thats about as prestigious a list as you'll find with probably the sole exception of Stanford.
