UIUC vs Purdue vs Brown
Hey all,
UIUC, Purdue and Brown University offered me admission for their MS program in computer science. I'm extremely delighted but I can't make up my mind. I'm currently considering UIUC the most since it is higher ranked than Brown and Purdue. However, there are other things to take into consideration such as location, ability to work in good academic institutions after graduation, etc.. I'd also like to note that all of these universities do solid research in my areas of interest, which happen to be compilers and programming languages, operating systems and security. |

Congratulations dude, I am really glad to hear that.
I know you are facing a great dilemma here, but you can't go wrong anyway. You can go to UIUC because it's a highly reputed engineering institute and ranks better than the others. Or you may stick with Brown because of the Ivy tag that would pay off in the future. Having said that, I can also argue in favor of Purdue since it's a great university with excellent CS department. Anyway, I think you may limit the decision between a Top 5 engineering university, and an Ivy League university. Would you care to share your profile? |

Sure
![]() Undergrad GPA: 4.0 Class rank: 1 National rank in computer science (Jordan): 1 GRE: Q 780, V 480, A 4.5 (first attempt was slightly worse..) GRE CS: they couldn't process my credit card for some reason.. TOEFL: 111/120 Areas of interest: compilers and programming languages, operating systems and security. Best projects: my own programming language and compiler, a small operating system, a C decompiler. Hmm, what else do you need to know? ![]() So far I got 1 rejection letter from UC Berkeley. UCLA didn't reply yet.. |

Personally, I would go with UIUC or Purdue. I would go with UIUC since that is good for academia. I would go with Purdue since the tuition is relatively low while having a great program.
Regarding Brown, I don't consider them an Ivey compared to the likes of Harvard. So I would rather go to UIUC than Brown since UIUC is better for CS. Also: Quote:
