Hi guys,

I just got an admit today...I got accepted at SUNY Stony Broof for MS in Applied Mathematics and statistics. my profile is:

BA in Mathematics and computer science from SUNY Buffalo, GPA 3.20
GRE 1st attempt: V:330, Q:550, A:3.5
2nd attempt: V:430, Q:800, A:4.5
Research experience + good Recom Letters

However I did not get any fiancial support

...I think my GRE scores and GPA were not competitive in the application pool.

I am from NY state so tution is kinda cheap from me, I mean I can take a loan but I am not sure if its really worth it to pay for Grad school cause usually students get paid to go to grad school.....Also I don't really know if its worth it to take a loan to go to Stony Brook, I would take a loan for an Ivy league school...I don't know what do you guys think? Maybe I should work instead and reapply [bomb]

Hey Congradtz on the admit. working instead and then reapplying is not a bad option but at the end of the day comes down to your choice,

I believe a lot of schools offer support for PHD but not always the MS program. I believe it is common for MS programs to have no support initially, but if you show promise after you start you can get TA,RA support. Before you give up and try to reapply, I would talk to someone there and see what you chance are for getting support in subsequent semesters (That's if you have not done that already).

Yes in general MS students are supported after seeing sufficient potential in them after their first semester. You might be even lucky to show that before you start through personal meething with faculty there.

In fact there is some hidden advantage in here since you are free to try different professors for your research while still working towards your MS degree.

I think you guys gave me great advice....I have also talked to some of my professors and they told me that Stony Brook is a goos school and to go there if I can. I think I will go in there and then I will try to work my way through the system.

Hey,

SUNY Stony Brook's applied math is one of the best programs in the nation, perhaps the world. A friend of mine is applying to Stony brook's program and has told me good things about the professor and students. He told me that the graduate program is very diverse, attracting student from all over the world. If my memory is correct, one of the profs. in applied math dept., James Glimm, was recently named by President Bush as one of the eight winners of National Medal of Science (Applied Mathematics). Like people say, if you want to be the best, you have to learn from the best! Now, the departments going to be lasvishly funded by the shcool/government. BTW, as for physics, Stony brook is a powerhouse. Prof. C. N. Yang, is a Nobel laureate, and all the profs. are recognized internationally for their work. In addition, stony brook's science department has a partnership with Brookhaven Lab which is also generously funded by the fed. gov. Having said that, you will have endless research opportunities @ Stony Brook. Good Luck

BTW, yuou will definitely need a car @ Stony Brook. I have visited the school couple of years ago and a nearest convenient store was couple of miles away from the campus. It is pretty isolated, nevertheless a beautiful campus. If you want to go out to Manhattan, you train station is in the school, so it'll take you 1.5 hours to get there. Hope I was helpful

Woops! the physics part was for other guy who was interested in applied math or physic. Sorry about that.

thanks so much for your valuable information...the information you gave me really help me make my choice.....I will go to Stony Brook, yeah Prof James Glimm is one of the best applied mathematicians in the world. I have also asked some grad students at my current school and they told me the same thing you said, they said its a great prgram....

.....So how about yourself what school you going to, are you srudying applied mathematics cause you seem to know a lot about it....Myself I am interested in mathematical physics particularly the application, of Group, field and ring theory to problems in physics......talk to you later buddy!
