This # determined by what you see at the bottom of the page; the databases shows member #50,000 signed up a long time ago. The database has more members because a lot of people sign up, but don't confirm their registration.

Sadly, in forums most people only said "hi" if they are interesting in something or if they have a concrete doubt. Hope I am wrong in this case but lurkers are all but are rare specie.

Unfortunately, you're absolutely right. Only a small percentage of the people here are really interested in developing a community, the others just post an essay or two for evaluation and disappear.

Erin, perhaps you should make an announcement about this but I'm not sure how it could sound.

Yeah, there's not much that can be done to 'turn lurkers into posters'. Funny, I was just reading an article about 'participation inequality in online communities' yesterday.

Summary:
