Hi guys~
I am currently a junior in high shool. I am not popular in school so there's no way for me to be a class officer or in student body. I am not a club person; I tried, but clubs really aren't the thing for me. They bored me... doing the same events and stuff. I am wondering how am I suppose to demonstrate my leadership skills. Is there ways other than being in clubs and officer to show leadership? Is it too late if I join clubs now?? I heard that clubs don't really help on applications? (Does work count as a sort of leadership?) |

Well, leading implies that there are others to follow. Could you do something in which you'd have the capacity to work with others or influence them?
I think taking initiative for something, such as taking a job, could work, too. But there are plenty of people--the majority of them, in fact--who are never 'leaders' in high school. Leadership can help your application, but other things can, too. Just try to present yourself as you are; that can be a great asset as well. |

Intern at some place too and well try participating in school events. You don't have to try and lead all of them. Sometime you get participation certificates too. It also depends on what universities are you planning to go for.

For future students, get certified as a lifeguard and work at the local pool the summer between junior and senior year. It's a nice job and you typically teach swimming lessons as well; hence, leadership experience.
You can also start a club. One of my friends started the sailing club at school (I grew up near one of the Great Lakes). The only thing cooler to colleges than being president of a club is being its founder. For those who are a few years younger, an excellent opportunity for leadership is through Scouting. It takes 3.5 years to make it to Eagle Scout or Silver Star, and in the meantime, you get to lead patrols and troops of younger kids. If you do really well, you might also become a counselor at one of your district's camps. |
