making my dream a reality

hello everyone. my name is mark. i recently graduated from high school. my average was a 77 overall. i decided to attend a community college in my area (upstate NY) - majoring in business management - to maybe make up for all the slacking off i did during high school. the only extra curricular i had was the Computer Club. A little good news is i scored a total of 1120 (math/verbal combined) on my SAT. my dream is to attend cornell university. i was thinking if i do extremely well in my first year or two and applying to cornell. i heared if i do a few activities i might have a chance... what do u guys think? any comments please reply. thanks!

In order to transfer to Cornell from your current state (which is going to be a Community College) you are going to need an extremely high GPA (think 3.7-3.9) and are going to need several extracurricular activities if you want a chance. Another factor is going to be your SAT score, which unlike other schools, Cornell does require an SAT score from transfer students (think 1350-1400 SAT - for some schools [look at disclaimer at bottom]).

Well there is good news: Cornell unlike other ivies does take many transfer students, and most importantly in your case is that they especially and actually favor Community College transfer students. If you are a member of Phi Theta Kappa (an honor society, you are eligible for a $5000 scholarship)

Although I do recommend two years before you transfer because if you only go to a c.c. for one year a high school transcript might be necessary, and trust me you don't wang that one thing ruining your application.

Overall, if your dream school is Cornell you are going to have to definitely improve your stats greatly - most importantly that GPA and SAT score - but if you do it, you definitely have a shot. Remember you'll be taking the NEW SAT so remember to add in that extra study time if you want to do well on the writing section.

My one question is that, Cornell does not have an undergraduate business management program (just applied economics) so wouldn't be better to go to a school which has the major you are interested in?

Here is a pdf which shows the admittance rate for transfer students at Cornell's various schools (just to give you an idea that ain't going to be easy):

http://dpb.cornell.edu/irp/pdf/FactB...ransbycoll.pdf

If you think that these requirements are little too tough for you, post back and we'll try to help you find the perfect college that will be the perfect match for you (with reasonable predictions)

Disclaimer: Both CAS and CALS do not require SAT scores, however it is recommended that you do send them as they can give you an extra boost.

I don't know if i could score that high on the SAT. I thought that Cornell offered a business program. I looked at http://aem.cornell.edu/undergrad/index.htm and i thought i could just do the business program. If not, do you think there is any other nationally recognized school in my state (NY) that offers a business program? Thanks for your help so far - it means a lot to me.

My mistake - I didn't realize that Cornell offered their business program through the College of Arts and Life Sciences. Although unlike what I said before, you are going to need standardized test scores (1400ish).

If you don't think you can get that score, there are many other respectable business programs in New York:

(SUNY) U Albany / Binghamton University - Both have programs that are respected in New York.

What community college are you enrolled in? Binghamton has an agreement with many community colleges that says if you meet the criteria specified in the agreements and whose applications are completed early are generally admitted and encouraged to enroll. Also, they don't require standardized testing from transfer students.

NYU (Stern) - This program will likely be as tough to get into as Cornell.

CUNY Baruch - Don't know too much about this program, but it does have a good reputation - especially in its business department.

im attending SUNY Mohawk Valley Community College. Im pretty sure all credits transfer to all SUNY schools. It would just be amazing for me to attend an ivy league school. it seems almost impossible becuase of the high SAT score that is required.

...have you considered taking the ACT? Most students do much better on the ACT than on the SAT - it tests more what you know than logical reasoning on the SAT.
