Can someone please tell me what you think? I'm pretty worried about how my teacher will grade this. This is an example essay. You basically state the thesis in the first paragraph then use three more paragraphs to set examples to support that thesis. Finally comes a conclusion for a total of five paragraphs.
The first use of the separation of church and state in America was in the colony of Rhode Island, which provided a complete freedom of religion. It was soon followed by Pennsylvania and Connecticut. As a result, they were the most prosperous of the colonies at the time, with a wide expansion of population and a prosperity of new ideas. Since the first amendment in the Bill of Rights, all American citizens have had the freedom to worship or not worship as they please. This was the most important step that the founding fathers could have taken to secure the future of the United States. However, I have seen Republicans in office and Republican candidates for office attempt to use their faith to get elected or re-elected. They have also, all too often, attempted to push their religious beliefs on the American people. They use the bible as their reason for wanting to abolish gay marriage. In the name of their god they try to take away women's rights, including that to have an abortion. They have even used religion as a reason to promote abstinence only education, which clearly does not work. I have nothing against Christians whatsoever, but to try to legislate Christianity is wrong, and when I get Christianity shoved down my American throat it does not make me happy.
The polls often dispute each other about how many people actually claim to be gay or lesbian but we know that there are approximately ten million homosexuals living in America. Since the passing of the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996 the definition has been “ only a legal union between one man and one woman as husband and wife, and the word ‘spouse’ refers only to a person of the opposite sex who is a husband or a wife”. Therefore the federal government does not acknowledge a marriage of a lesbian or gay couple. Although some states acknowledge this union, including California, many others, such as Alabama, Texas, and Louisiana completely ban same sex marriage. This means that in Alabama, when George and Bob have been together for forty years and Bob ends up on life support the doctor decides whether or not to pull Bob's plug; not George. Carol and Ben have been married in Alabama for the same amount of time but the doctor asks Carol whether or not to pull Ben's plug. This type of discrimination is sadly common but it is also disgusting and outrageous. In most cases America gives people more rights, but in this case they take them away. I, for one, can not say that my relationship with my girlfriend is any more important or meaningfully than the one that my gay and lesbian friends share. When I first realized that this was even an issue in the United States, I was eighteen years old and I was absolutely appalled at the fact that such discrimination is allowed in the United States. Just because the bible defines marriage a certain way does not mean that everyone must define it the same way. I, and millions of other Americans, define marriage as a union between two people who love each other, and are willing to support each other through times that are difficult or times that are pleasant.
In most cases I would say that attacking one's family is off limits in a presidential election. But, in the case of Bristol Palin I understand why people are criticizing Sarah Palin's skills as a mother. This is because Sarah's failure to keep her daughter from getting pregnant is a direct result of her policy of not teaching children about sex but teaching them that abstinence is the only way to keep from retrieving Sexually Transmitted Diseases and getting pregnant. This stems from the Christian belief that virginity should not be given away until marriage. That's very nice but, teenagers have raging hormones and they are going to have sex whether the bible tells them not to, or their parents tell them not to, or if the Lord Almighty tells them not to. The average age of loss of virginity is between sixteen and seventeen but, the average age of first time marriage is twenty six for males and twenty five for females. That seems to tell me that there there are millions of teenagers and young adults having sex out of wedlock and someone should probably teach these kids about protecting themselves against pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. The republicans believe that abstinence is the only sex education that should be taught in schools and in homes. It has been proven that, not only does this philosophy not work, but it makes the problem even worse.
So when these kids get pregnant with the baby of someone that they really don't love, but are actually just infatuated with, what is the answer that the republicans give them. “You want an abortion? You must be out of your mind if you think I'm going to let you do that.” Now poor Bristol, not only gets to have a baby long before she is capable of having and caring for a baby, but she also gets to marry the boy who impregnated her, whether she likes it or not; dooming her to a failed marriage and lessening her chances at succeeding at, or even going to college. Many republicans, including Sarah Palin, believe that abortion should be completely abolished, even in cases of rape or incest. Not only does that mean a girl who has been raped would have to have the rapists baby, but if she is found by the courts to be an unfit mother, the rapist could possibly even end up taking custody of the child. I am not pro-abortion. I am pro-choice. I would not suggest to any one that they get an abortion but I also would not want the courts to tell someone that they must have a baby before they are ready to care for the child and give him or her all the opportunities that America has to offer.
The reason that this country is the best in the world is not because we have the smartest people or because we are righteously superior to any other country. This country has done so well because it allows us so many freedoms; namely freedom of religion. This freedom has given us the ability to accept hundreds of different new ideas, philosophies, nationalities, political views, and religions. There is no national religion in this country because there are so many different religions and so many people, like myself who have no religion at all.
