If I write a statement of purpose focusing on what I am doing, which is only tangentially related to the school's research, but mention my interest in specific professor's research will that help or hurt?
In the "Research Experience" you can mention your "research exposure" then on the "Future Research Interests" you can write about what kind of research you are planning to carry out in the future. However, avoid copying specific details that match the current research of the school because this is subject to change in the near future. So it's safer to approach the research area in a general way.

I read your experience, it's multi-disciplinary and unique that's why you need to search for programs from different disciplines with interest in CS.

Thanks Luma for the suggestion regarding statement of purpose... I was really confused how to relate projects and what to include.

Finished my GRE got 1390 (just 10 pts more than my previous score). I wanted to improve quantitative and got 800 this time compared to 750 previously, but bombed verbal with just 590 (previous score 630).. Just could not concentrate while reading passages.

I think I am going to apply anyways, I need some suggestion regarding statement of purpose. Since I have 5 yrs of experience I am thinking of writing my statement of purpose in reverse chronological order, I mean, talk about my current work experience then about my undergraduate studies. Although I do have a good GPA in undergrad, my projects are not related to the kind of researches I am planning for graduate studies. So, I am thinking to just listing the undergraduate projects than explaining them in detail. Will not mentioning the details hurt? Because I don't know if I mention project I did in Networking then would that really matter to them when I am telling that I want to do researches in Computer Graphics and simulation.

Thanks in advance.

Long list, you'll need a fortune to apply to them
Stanford, UIUC, UMCP, and UTA are ambitious for lack of research.

Thanks Luma,

My work basically involves R&D so do you think it is worth giving a shot for those ambitious univ you have listed. But then again LORs are not going to be stellar. statement of purpose will be pretty good though.

Also, if you can suggest some schools to drop from the list, it would be great.

The problems is your target is MS not PhD. Therefore, the top schools prefer either PhD applicants or MS applicants with remarkable research. If you are a domestic applicant I believe you will have a relatively better chance for admission.

I am not a domestic student, but my UG was from an American university's international campus. Have been working in Tokyo for almost 5 yrs now, company ain't big but is known for developing research oriented medical software.

And yes, applying for PhD in Stanford.
