Urgent Query.

Hi all, I think I had already asked this query (I'm not so sure), but I'm asking it.

Query:

Which US universities accept students who had already done an M.Tech (Master of Technology)? (By U.S. universities, I mean 'reputed' ones)

I already have a Bachelor's in Information Technology, but I had done my Bachelor's from a non-elite institute (non IIT, NIT,etc), and also I have pretty ordinary grades at the under-graduate level, so in order to offset these-- I'm keen on pursuing an M.Tech (Master of Technology) program in Computer Science from a reputed institute (say IIIT(H) or IIIT(B)) in my country (India).

I also would like to pursue an M.S. in U.S. from a reputed institute. So, in order to achieve this, I'm contemplating of pursuing a Masters from an elite institute in my country -- to get 'good' letter of reference(s), do some nice projects, etc.

I have no qualms in re-taking the General GRE again, or attempting the Computer Science subject GRE.

Now, I would like to know provided I do really well in my Masters course do I stand a chance of securing an admit in a top-notch or at least a good school in the U.S. for an M.S. in Computer Science?

Please answer these queries of mine. Also, do provide your suggestion/opinion/advice.

Sure, I would think so. (As long as, during your MTech, you take courses that cover the prerequisites listed on their CS department websites or do well on the GRECS.)

Most top notch schools either don't have a MS in CS or require you to pay your way through.

Well, I had already taken many of the pre-requisite courses during my under-graduation. (For instance: C and Data Structures, Automata and Compiler Design, Computer Networks, etc)

Do I stand a chance of securing an admit for an M.S. in Computer Science at schools like UT Austin, UCLA, et al?

By "top-notch" schools, I mean schools which are in the top 30 or 40. (Discard MIT, Stanford, et al)

I'm pretty keen on doing an M.S. in a very good school, so in order to achieve that I'm thinking of pursuing an M.Tech in Computer Science at a place like IIIT(H) or IIIT(B) -- which are renowned institutes.

Any suggestions/advice are welcome.

Thanks!

A IIIT just wont cut the same ice as a IIT or a IISc. If you cannot get through to those by kickass GATE scores, then the best option (at the risk of being a fanboy for my school), I would recommend you to to give the ISI M.Tech CS entrance test.

If you get through, you will get the opportunity to research with really good CS professors and most of them are quite well known in the world - that I can assure you.

But, there are also excellent professors at IIIT(H) and IIIT(B). How difficult is it to crack ISI's entrance examination (for Computer Science)? (I do know that it's an excellent institute)

Apparently, there is an MIT Computer Science PhD in one of those IIIT(s).

Do you think it's possible to crack ISI's entrance examination?

Please give advice/suggestion.

I went to Jadavpur University (have you ever heard of it?) and now I am in ISI. Believe me, even from JU, there are students in top 5 CS institutions like MIT, CMU, UMich, UWA, UMD, Duke etc.

And yes, it is difficult to crack the ISI entrance test since they take around 15 students a year in the M.Tech program. There is also an entry via GATE but the cutoff is 99%.

ISI M.Tech is very stat-math oriented but the test is crackable for anyone who knows a lot of theory in CS.

Yeah, I do know about Jadavpur University. I do readily acknowledge that the ISI entrance is very difficult.

Will I be not be able to make into the top 40 if I did an M.Tech from IIIT(H) or IIIT(B)? ( I think, probably, I can make it)

The only reason I'm thinking of pursuing an M.Tech from IIIT is because I intend to garner some 'great' letter of reference(s), etc.

Any suggestion/advice in this regard would be helpful. Thanks! (This query is addressed to all)

Are there any universities (good ones) which don't give admission to people who already have an M.Tech in Computer Science? (I mean, universities in the top 50)
