Yes, I agree. It's not like this is some life-or-death ethical decision involving organ transplants. So do what you feel is best for you. This is just college admissions and, like MDK says, they are expecting some people to back out for various reasons, including some people not being able to get loans or visa approval and some people being uncomfortable with the tuition costs.

Since USC does offer more NLP courses, has a more traditional thesis option, and is close to the action in Silicon Valley, it may certainly be a better environment than Brown for learning NLP.

I just want to thank all of you for all your valuable information.
I will be at USC next year and I can easily say with this admission process I gained lots of experience

By the way I forgot to mention that I was wrong about the costs of attendance in USC. For my I-20 I submitted a bank letter promising support of approximately $49,000 for one year. (In Brown, it was $59,000).

Oh yes, and I think the best thing about the insanity of the admissions process is that it helps one stay motivated when the going gets tough in grad school.

the $59,000 for Brown, is it for 8 months or 12 months?

It says "annual" in the catalog, so it may be for 12 months.
The thing I don't understand is : What is the difference between 8 and 12 months if I don't take courses in the summer?
