I have same admits and I am planning to goto UPenn by taking a loan. My investigation says it has better exposure and department.
Let me know what you decide upon. I would like to know why Calmlogic is suggesting stonybrook if we leave the cost criteria. Please comment Calmlogic because I really consider your comments seriously. Thanks |

Yeah, if money wasn't an issue, UPenn would be the obvious choice for me. But the money issue is a big deal since the I-20 from UPenn asks for $60,500 (according to an Edulix poster).
Since I am financially conservative to begin with, I would go to SUNY SB and work on my resume more, such as by getting more certifications, more experience (paid or unpaid, e.g. opensource projects), more TopCoder awards, etc.

BTW, if you haven't see this already:
Career Services, University of Pennsylvania (video) Career Services, University of Pennsylvania (Advice from alumni who got jobs) Google, Microsoft, and Cisco definitely recruit from UPenn (as shown on the video). SUNY SB lists a few companies here: Quote:
You may get a better impression searching Google for resumes of people who got a degree in CS from either school. For example:SUNY SB: Homepage of Jalal Mahmud (PhD student who interned at IBM & Google) http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&rls=com.microsoft%3A*%3AIE-SearchBox&rlz=1I7DKUS&q=site%3Awww.cs.sunysb.edu%2 F+computer+science+resume resume - Google Search site:sunysb.edu resume google computer science - Google Search UPENN: site:upenn.edu resume computer science - Google Search site:upenn.edu resume google computer science - Google Search

I disagree, partially. The reason that SB has a good reputation in CS is not only because of good tuition but also because of good placements. The location certainly helps. I know nobody from SB (and I know a lot of CS graduates from that place) who doesn't have good jobs. I also don't think that the entry positions are that much different in UPenn and SB. The only reason why one should go to UPenn is if you want to do a PhD later on. Then, it helps.

To add to ATB's point, I don't see any of the MS grads getting jobs at Google:
recent-graduates.shtml Or maybe Google just hires PhDs mostly. I would have no idea.

I have a MS in CS from sunysb and am now working at microsoft. I also have several friends from stony that now work at ms/google/apple/nvidia. In the past few years MS and google have been coming to campus every year or every other year with really big recruiting presentations. I also know tons of people who ended up working at financial institutions in the area like citibank, lehman brothers, jp morgan, etc.
