BTW, since UIC doesn't even seem to fund all of their PhD students prior to admission, they may not be good for aid. But I don't know how that compares to SUNY SB or UPENN.

Unless you like to avoid (additional) risk. Personally, as an American, I would rather have a mortgage than a student loan, although they are not always mutually exclusive:

Quote:
A study by the Cambridge Consumer Credit Index showed that 75% of college graduates with student loans said that student loan payments prevented them from buying a house or car.

Don't Let Student Loans Prevent You From Qualifying for a Mortgage
And the IT industry, generally speaking, values experience more than education. Certainly, there is a significant advantage in getting an MS degree from any U.S. institution to increase one's chances for the H1B, but I don't see any clear arguments for the ROI of UPenn unless you want to go into gaming where they clearly have an industry edge over the other 2 schools.

Yet another UPenn VS SB thread.

I think that we have established that unless you really really want to do a PhD from a top ranked place then SB is good.

Although, you can still do a PhD from a top ranked place even if you graduate from SB. But, SB is primarily full of international students who want H1Bs.

In other words, if you want to go into industry nobody really cares where you got your degree from. You don't want a 75K debt but a 20K one.

Leaving aside Top notch univs(~top20) does this really apply to all other univs within top 50-60 ranks...I feel that college location(city or industrial hub like CA,NC..or village)& reputation of the univ in the related industry & related course work(esp specialization at least in terms of coursework) is all that matters.

Yes college reputation is important. Neither SB nor UCSC nor TAMU are in the top 20 in US News and World Report or anywhere else but they still have some of the best recruiting practices around.
