Thanks for the quick replies guys, CalmLogic, What I meant by saying that I can alter my research interests is that if I know the research projects that are being carried out in these universities, I can have a headstart on those or similar areas but still within my wider research area. OK, don't think you still have a clear idea about what I'm saying. OK, here's an example. Now, my research interest is on behavioral aspects of robotics and AI. If I know that a certain department is carrying out research on, let's say, re-enforcement learning mechanisms, I can do a little research on that specific area as well and get familiarized with the department's research while still being in the larger domain of my interest, right? Hope I've cleared any ambiguities you had on that. And about my GF; well, we made this together. She's in this tedious process as much as I am and will continue to do so until we get this thing finalized. Her research interest is computer graphics, so first of all we made every effort to find schools that had research on both areas. Then we tried to address the two body problem. In fact, some of these schools were her suggestions and they appeared to my interests as well. The list I'm building takes into account both of our interests, it's just that I'm the one with the testmagic account, so I'm the one to trouble you guys
. MDK, Thanks for your advice. I guess you are right saying that I might loose an opportunity in removing Northeastern. But as I've said earlier I have two major problems to think about: funding and applying to universities where at least two universities are not too distant from each other. I admit I'm new to this whole studying in US thing, which is why I value your advice so much. Once again thanks to both of you. I earnestly look forward to your assistance in getting this right. BTW, if you guys have time, please think of the matter from my perspective and please put up a university list which you guys would choose after taking all the things I mentioned in earlier times into account. That would be a really great help indeed. It's too much to ask, so, only if you have time. Cheers |

OK, so your interests are in robotics/AI/machine learning? Anything I'm missing? What about computer vision? Is that a minor interest compared to machine learning (Can anyone suggest me some good universities for Machine Learning?)?
(BTW, you may want to briefly consider the University of Utah since their pre-application fee is only $15 or so. But then when you add the cost of score reporting and the inconvience of sending recommendation letters, I guess it's not a big deal.)

Well, look at that. I guess I was finally able to clearly convey what I wanted to say. Since I'm interested in AI and robotics, yes, computer vision is also a pertinent area. OK, I will look into U of Utah too. In the meantime, please let me know anything that comes up to your mind of the universities I've listed earlier. Thanx and keep up the good work.

I was just going to suggest University of Utah, but it seems that Calmlogic has suggested it already. Anyways, IMHO I think it's the best fit for both of you because it has the best computer graphics lab in the States ( that's what graphics guys said), in addition they have a great robotics group. Have a look on these links:

Maybe a kindred spirit from the past whose previous posts can be helpful:

hey guys,
I was going through the university websites of my list and got to know that some universities require us to send a financial statement showing sufficient funds for at least the first year of graduate study. However, they have also mentioned that PhD student are provided with full financial assistance and they won't offer admission if they don't have the funds to support the student (for eg. Duke). What do they mean by this? I don't think I can show such funds in my bank accounts (or my parents for that matter), so, does this mean that I can't apply to such schools (that require such documents). Are most schools like this??? (I guess this issue is there only for the international students) Please help me out. Thanx to anyone who can clarify this. |

Thanks MDK,
But I'm still confused on this. When you said that I can later send my financial statements to get the I20, would I still have to show that I have sufficient funds or can I depend entirely on whatever the financial aid package I get? If that package is not sufficient to cover the whole expenses, what will the situation then be? |
