Plz Advice me
Hello everyone,
Just gave my Gre on 22nd and got 1430 marks and i am satisfied with it as i was expecting around 1350 and got much more than that. Q-760 V-630 Could have increased my score if had joined this formus earlier on, you guys simply rock. And i have some queries and i need your help once again, i am thinking for applying for the spring semester 2009 or may be fall 2009, to which universities should i apply, my profile is B.Tech in Information Technology: 65% Gre-1430 done around 3 projects in college in java language could get good letters of recommendation I am interested in doing more projects, should i concentrate on that or should prepare for gre subject test or publications.I posted the same question in just finished gre section http://www.urch.com/forums/just-fini...0-v-670-a.html (Finally its over 1430 Q-760 V-670) but i think this is the appropriate section to ask this question Thanks for reading |

Though which schools you should apply to is always the primary concern, it's always hard to say since LORs, which are usually undisclosed, can make or break you -- ranging from the dreaded ("did well in class") to the impossibly good ("best student researcher I've had in 30 years"). And I really don't know how strong/weak your GPA is because I could never fully understand the grading system in non-US countries. You may want to mention your class rank or the topper, etc.
Since your GRE score is good, your GPA seems to be your weakness and nothing you mention in your profile seems to really stand out. So how well you do on submitting a publication or taking the GRECS could easily make the difference between going to GA Tech or just having to settle for maybe something like NCSU -- which is actually a very good school, and I hear Raleigh is second to Silicon Valley for the number of IT jobs. (And I am assuming you are applying for an MS degree.) Rationally, at this point, your best bet is to work on your research or the GRECS and to not worry about which schools to apply to. Realistically, though, I know that's impossible for most people, especially myself.

my rank in class would be around 15 out of 75 students in the class, and class topper getting around 74% and mine being 65%. |

Right now, I think the highest you can aim is GA Tech (as your most ambitious, "crazy" option -- hoping to get lucky) unless you really do something surprisingly good between now and the time you apply. Similarly, you could have problems getting into lower ranking schools with a lot of competition like TAMU and problems applying to places with relatively few slots like Purdue and even Iowa State. So to be safer, you also want to include larger, safer departments like Columbia (which is too expensive for me) and NCSU, but it seems hard to get aid at either of those schools, which is one reason they are safer options. (You certainly would get into USC, which is still known as a safety school for MS applicants.)
