UCI Vs NCSU Vs UF Vs ASU for MS in CS

Hi guys,
i got admits from

• UC Irvine
• NCSU
• UF (with 40% tuition waiver)
• ASU

for MS in CS. My research interests are systems software/networking.

UC Irvine seems to be a good research univ, but its costly and funding is a concern for me. My friend at UCI says that its almost impossible for international MS students to get aid. Could anybody throw some light abt the aid/on-campus job scenario at ICS UCI ?

Considering the quality of research in the systems/networking area and the funding chances, which univ would u advise ?

Personally, I would go to UF for the guarantee of a lower tuition cost unless any of the other schools excite you much more, especially since I would believe your friend's assessment about the funding scene at Irvine.

Research-wise, I don't which school is best for either networking or systems software. I would think NCSU should be better for networking research since they offer an MS in it with a thesis option and excellent networking labs, but that may just mean they are better at providing academic training for Cisco (which isn't bad considering the average CCIE holder pays over $9,000 for typically informal, non-academic training).

I want to specialize in n/w's which is possible only in NCSU..but at the cost of 17lacs
Do u think its worth doing a masters without specialization?

Hi SK84,

I find myself in the same situation with having to choose between UFL, NCSU, UCI and SUNYSB. UFL seems to be a decent university with low tuition ( with the 40% fee waiver that is ) , but is far away from IT hotspots. I also did not find anything special going on there with respect to systems software research. NCSU is good for networking, although expensive and lower ranked. UC Irvine seems the logical choice considering its the highest ranked among all your admits. Its location is another plus point. Personally, for me though, I'm having a hard time trying to decide between SUNY SB and UCI!

UCI does seem the logical choice and its CS program is very good, but the biggest problem is its cost. The tuition fee is $26K/yr. I enquired with a couple of MS students at UCI. These are their views

• aid for MS students is rare, even for the whole 2 yrs
• inspite of its location, internship/job scene is not very good

All these factors are making me consider NCSU.
