SUNY SB vs UC Irvine

Hi guys,

I have an MS CS admit from both SUNY Stony Brook and UC Irvine. SUNY has lower tuition and living costs but UC Irvine is slightly better ranked. Also, since Irvine is in California, tech jobs are plenty. I'm interested in OS/ Distributed OS. I'm in a great dilemma , please advise!

I would prefer UC for this particular reason. On the other hand, the job scene at SB isn't bad at all.

Thanks for your reply MDK. One more thing is about the area of specialization. Do you know which one is better for Systems in general?

A graduate student from SB wrote this:

But as far as I know, Vmware is big employer for people in Systems.. Bloomberg comes for financials.. Google and Yahoo for algortihm ppl... Not sure of more.. maybe slowly i'll find out more...

In systems, I've personally seen people goto vmware (those who take Zadok's OS class), only 1 to Google (a PhD student from IITKgp who dropped out with a Masters), and this was thru off campus btw. Package is between 85k-90k.

Internship scene is very good, I've seen PhD people make it to Samsung, IBM Research (TJ Watson, Hawthorne, Almaden etc.) and it can't really get better than this. Financial interns are easy to get. So no worries on interns. Also, a lot of people do summer research in the dept. itself - by doing which, you tend to graduate sooner. 4 yrs rather than 5 yrs, for instance. This is at the cost of low paying summer research viz a viz high paying external internships

Ka-ching, ka-ching Even if just a few grads get those kindof packages, it's still a very good sign. (Of course, in some places 90k may be like 70k or less due to cost of living.)
