Nina2010
Is it correct to use "from among" with verbs like: "love", "like", etc., to express and emphasise preference of one object over others? E.g., could we say/write: "From among a great number of people, we like only certain ones, rather than others or should we say/write: "Among a great number of people, we like only certain ones, rather than others" Which one would be correct/more correct? Thanks for all comments Nina
wasleys
Nina, Welcome to TM. From among would be very unusual, but in this context among is not right. The whole sentence sounds strange and awkward. What thoughts are you trying to convey? Michael
Nina2010
This is about trying to ask why we "choose" only certain people as objects of our love/liking. I would like to say: there are many people in the world, many people we meet every day, but for some reason, only some of them arouse these feelings in us. Would it be more correct to say: "Out of many people we like only certain ones"?
wasleys
Nina, The longer explanation you have given would, if edited, be far better. But as you seem intent on sticking with your original phrasing it might be better to say something like 'we like only some of the many people we know'. For 'some' you might use 'a few' depending on your precise meaning.
Nina2010
Well, your proposition of reformulating this sentence seems to express exactly what I want to say. Thank you!:)
