Is "instead" used correctly in this sentence?

She is not a bookworm at all. Instead, she is an active student and a responsible class president.

If not, what can we use to alter "instead"?

Cinder, 'instead' is an adverb meaning 'in the place of somebody/something':

Peter was ill so I went instead.
He didn't reply. Instead, he turned on his heel and left the room.

Maybe you mistook 'instead' for 'instead of'?

'Instead of' is a preposition, also meaning 'in the place of sb/sth'.

Now I can walk to work instead of going by car.
We just had soup instead of a full meal.

    HTH!
