I have a few questions about applying to a finance phd program. First off, I will give some background so that you can better evaluate me.
I did my undergrad at a small state school with a major in math and minors in statistics and actuarial science (GPA 3.8). I got A's in calc I-III, linear algebra, and regression. Got B's in ODE's, advanced calc (intro. real analysis) and Math Stat I-II.

I am currently working on my master's in actuarial science at a large public university. I am taking another (slightly more advanced) 2 course Math Stat sequence, as well as some actuarial classes. By the time I will be applying to phd programs, I will have taken or be enrolled in PDE's, 1 semester of grad level real analysis, and several actuarial science classes based on a stochastic approach to actuarial science and one for fiance (brownian motion, Ito's Lemma, etc).

I did a reasearch internship after my junior year during which I was working on improving a trading strategy for assets that were based on a stochastic model. However the material was over my head at the time and so I did apply myself fully. As a result, I would not get the best recommendation from my reviewer. I also wrote a senior thesis about multiple linear regression and I would get an ok/good recommendation from my advisor but nothing extraordinary.

Oh, and I should have 3-4 actuarial exams passed by then (currently have 2), but I doubt that matters much.

Also, I took the GRE when applying to master's programs and scored a 800Q, 530V, 4.0AW.

My research interests is in quantitative risk management.

I have a few questions:
1) I did not study at all for the GRE (took one practice test the day b4). As such, I am confident I could dramatically raise my verbal score. Will this matter much since I am from the U.S. or should i retake it?
2) I was lazy in undergrad and this resulted in a few B's. If i get A's in PDE's, Math Stats, and Real Analysis and mosty A's in my Actuarial Science, what "range" or "level" or "rank" of programs do I have a good shot at?
3) Other than what I have already listed, what can I do to improve my chances?

Hi all, looking for comments on my profile for Fall 2010 PhD Accounting with focus on audit research.

Undergrad: Accounting + Finance Double degree
GPA: 4.0 (large state school)
GMAT: 730 (Q50;V40)
Exp: 3.5 years in Big 4 audit
letter of reference: Great rec from work, decent from school
Major Weaknesses: No advanced math/econ background, no masters, no great professor <a href='#' class='gal' onmouseover='GAL_popup(this,"1", 300, "", "LoR means letter of recommendation (e.g., from a supervisor, or a former professor of yours) which some programs may require you to supply as part of your application to their program.
My plan is to apply to 6-7 top state universities with good audit professors (minus UIUC and UT-Austin). The ranking surveys that are available seem to be more for financial accounting so I selected the schools based the professors' background and recent placements. I did not pick any real 'safety' schools as I don't want to spend the next 4-5 years in a place that I won't like. I appreciate any feedback on this strategy and things I can do to boister my chances for admission.

Also, is it generally a good idea to send an email to the program director/professor to reiterate my interests in the school?

Thanks!

I have come into this forum when I was surfing the net looking for some admission information for phds. I really would need some help and advice on my chance to getting into Warwick Phd finance. Thanks...

here is my details:
Undergraduate at Chinese University of Hong Kong BBA(one of the top business school in hk) with GPA 2.9 (2:2)
1 year non-relevant working experience after graduation
Now studying MSc Accounting and Finance at Cardiff University (expected to get +80)

LOF: I can have LOF from a good management accounting professor as well as my programme director who graduated from Warwick in MSc level and LBS of phd level

What is my chance of getting into Warwick University for its Phd finance? and when should be my personal deadline for application? Do I need a GMAT? (because i am realli having loads of essays to work on for the MSc programme now) Are there any other suggestions of schools for me of which I am able to get into in UK or in US? I need studentship as I come from a poor family. I knew I didnt have much research experience and a good grade in undergraduate study, but I really want to do research and teach as my future career. Thank you very much.

Should I include a letter from an econ prof that barely knows me, or is it just going to diminish the impact of the other letters?

I realize that decisions on schools likely do not come down to purely financing, but it is certainly an aspect to consider.

I found while sorting through offers and such that the financial packages are very different among schools, some questions to consider....

1. Is your funding tied to teaching responsibilities?
2. Does your package include insurance?
3. Does the package waive tuition or tuition and fees? Fees at some schools are several thousand dollars
4. Is a computer provided/software packages (SAS, etc...) included?
5. Is the contract 9 months or 12 months? If 9 months are their opportunities to pick up summer teaching or research positions for additional funding?
6. What type of conference funding is there available for students?
7. Does the package include parking? Parking can be $500+ a year at some schools

Feel free to add others
