Hi all,

I am a Greek student who wants to apply for PhD (Computer Science – ‘Systems’ research field) to US. I m not sure what my chances though.

That’s my profile:

Undergrad Institution: Small unknown Greek university – Digital Systems
Overall GPA : 2.95 (according to WES)
Length of Degree: 4
Position in Class: sorry don’t know

Master's Institution: University of Bath (UK) – Top 10 in CS
Overall GPA : 3.73 (according to WES)
Length of Degree: 1
Position in Class: sorry don’t know

GRE Scores:
Math: 800
Verbal: 550
Writing: 4.0
AGRE: 780 - 71 %

TOEFL Total: 102

Research Experience: 1 published paper for “Digital Divide” in “Communication Research” Journal. I have been contributed in a Greek Research Program about Geographical Information Systems for 5 months. MSc Thesis. BSc Thesis.

Special Bonus Points: 2 excellent <a href='#' class='gal' onmouseover='GAL_popup(this,"1", 300, "", "LoR means letter of recommendation (e.g., from a supervisor, or a former professor of yours) which some programs may require you to supply as part of your application to their program. They are much more commonly required by graduate-level programs than by undergraduate programs.", "style=\"display: block;padding: 5px;z-index: 100;background-color: #323232;color: #fff;filter:alpha(opacity=90); /* for IE */opacity:0.9; /* CSS3 standard */width:auto;-moz-border-radius: 5px; /* this works only in camino/firefox */-webkit-border-radius: 5px; /* this is just for Safari */\"");' onmouseout='GAL_hidepopup();' style="text-decoration: none; border-bottom-style:dashed; border-bottom-width: 1px"> letter of reference – one from a famous professor. The third is from an unknown academic who knows very well my research skills.

I am not certain about what universities should I choose. I do not know in which ranking level I belong (according to USnews CS rankings). Top 20 programs? Below 20 programs?

In other words, should I apply to Stanford and Cornell? Or lower ranking universities such as University of Arizona and University of California--Santa Barbara? Or even much more lower?

Thanks in advance,
Michael

I was wondering what are some good schools that I could apply to with my grades.

I'm a domestic student looking for MS/PhD (or MS) programs in the top 30 for NLP/bioinformatics/general machine learning. I'd love to get into MS/PhD at Columbia, Michigan, or Maryland, but am very doubtful about my chances. I'm also planning on applying to MS programs at CMU, UT-Austin, USC, SUNY-Stony Brook, and UMinnesota. I'm very worried that I'm setting my sights much too high. Where should I be aiming? Here is my profile:

GPA: 3.99 at a top 40 CS school
GRE: 1410 (760 quant, 650 verbal)
no CSGRE
Research project in medical informatics/NLP, with one extended abstract/presentation at a medical informatics conference, and a paper being submitted to a medical informatics journal.
Major: Computer Science, with minors in Mathematics and Japanese

I'm really worried because I was sick when I took the GRE and ran out of time on the quant section. Is this going to kill my application? Or was it dead to start with?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

GRE: Quants I bungled 730, V 590 can not retake GRE now as it is late.

Aim: To get good, worth education which will enhance my profile.
Please suggest me good schools in terms of education, opportunities during and after studies.

Also which one will make more sense CS, MIS?

I liked MIS as it is interdisciplinary but people say CS has more options and tough compared to IS. And I like programming, Java etc so thinking of CS.

Please suggest me good schools based on my profile (safe/v safe/moderate/dream).

hello all,
i'm an international african student , in final year majoring in cs
i have not yet taken GRE or TOEFL so i will have to wait for fall 2011 admitions. in that period , i want your advices for strengthening my profile also i have few questions about universities
i plan for PhD (if possible) / Msc -> PhD
--
currently:
area of interest : Compiler Theory / Programming languages
unvi : #4 in my country , but not known outside it
GPA : till now 3.98 , first of my class
<a href='#' class='gal' onmouseover='GAL_popup(this,"1", 300, "", "LoR means letter of recommendation (e.g., from a supervisor, or a former professor of yours) which some programs may require you to supply as part of your application to their program. They are much more commonly required by graduate-level programs than by undergraduate programs.", "style=\"display: block;padding: 5px;z-index: 100;background-color: #323232;color: #fff;filter:alpha(opacity=90); /* for IE */opacity:0.9; /* CSS3 standard */width:auto;-moz-border-radius: 5px; /* this works only in camino/firefox */-webkit-border-radius: 5px; /* this is just for Safari */\"");' onmouseout='GAL_hidepopup();' style="text-decoration: none; border-bottom-style:dashed; border-bottom-width: 1px">
letter of reference : won't be that strong , the one that I'm assure of at the moment is from a UCF PhD (teaching in my uni at moment) , with whom i'm doing my undergrad project
papers/internships : nil
i also have a US citizenship

but i have independently done a number of small open source projects (0.5-2.5K in users and size) how can this count in my profile ? can they be counted as research (most noted of them are a small RegExp Engine , thread emulation layer for PHP , AES impl in ASM , 3D Scene Builder )

one more real research experiment i had was in computrizing a physics experiment with physics dept. in my uni (but this is 3 years old)

another thing i think i can depend on is my current undergrad project , an interpreter for a new dynamic,OOP DSL , i hope i can put it in a paper by july (after demonstrating it in college ) , can the project - without paper - be helpful ? in case of publishing , what reputed magazines won't require membership or fees ? any guidelines for them ?
--
after gathering info on unis with best reputation in my area of interest , (v. ambi :D , but i need to try ) seems CMU , Cornell & MIT (UBC & Stanford seems not to offer any financial assitantships )
what can i do in next year to make those unis more reachable ?
---
given that i won't be able to accept any uni that doesn't provide for a finiancial assitantships (full or combined to full in any means)

what other safe and moderate unis , with good reputation in my area of interest(most importantly with the financial condition likely ) can u recommend me ?

waiting for thy responses
Thanks
