Clearly our present general failure to participate in music-making is not due to any national lack of the musical faculty or to the absence of a desire to play and sing. We are directly descended from any number of musical nations. Among the scores of persons to whom I talked of this, I do not remember one intelligent adult, classed as 'no-musical,' who did not envy those lucky ones who were able to make their music together. While the radio and the phonograph have perhaps contributed to the discouragement of some amateur virtuosos, these devices can never eliminate permanently the fundamental need for the individual adventure in music. On the contrary, by spreading the knowledge of music they will greatly stimulate the desire for general music-making.

Q. What does the writer mean by "music making"?

a. composing music
b. playing professionally
c. playing or singing for personal pleasure
d. manufacturing musical instruments

I went with "B" at first, but OA is "C", and then "C" seems to me right. However, some doubt remains in my mind, and I get to write this question. According to the words "amateur" virtuosos or "general" music-making, does it imply "for personal pleasure" in "C"? What's your opinion?

The chimpanzee may be the animal closest in intelligence to man.
How close? Scientists have often tried to discover in chimps the skill
that makes man different from all other living things: language.
Until now, they have failed; the chimp simply does not have the
ability to speak that every human child is born with. But psychologist
David Premack of the University of California has succeeded in
showing that the chimpanzee can talk with man in ways other than
by the tongue.

Premack's proof is Sarah, a female chimp. Sarah can not only
understand the meaning of 120 sign words, but can use them to build
sentences of her own. After two years' work of only one chimpanzee,
David Premack naturally does not claim anything more than that
Sarah has shown intelligent use of language. "This does not mean
that she can produce all the functions of language, or that she can do
everything a human can," he writes, "But then," he adds hopefully,
"we have only been working with her a relatively short time."

Q. What is Premack's attitude in his quoted statements?
a. arrogantly subjective
b. cautiously objective
c. confidently optimistic
d. reluctantly pessimistic

I've chosen 'c. confidently optimistic,' but OA is 'b. cautiously objective.' I'm a bit confused between the two. Please explain to me.

The past few years have seen a steady increase in the number of people playing music in the streets. The past few years have also seen a steady increase in the number of malignant diseases. Are the two facts related? One wonders. But even if they are not--and, as I have pointed out, one cannot be sure -- music in the streets has definitely taken its toll. For it is at the very least disorienting. When one is walking down Fifth Avenue, one does not expect to hear a string quartet playing a Strauss waltz. What one expects to hear while walking down Fifth Avenue is traffic. When one does indeed hear a string quartet playing a Strauss waltz while one is walking down Fifth Avenue, one is apt to become confused and imagine that one is not walking down Fifth Avenue at all but rather that one has somehow wound up in Old Vienna. Should one imagine that one is in Old Vienna one is likely to become quite upset when one realizes that in Old Vienna there is no sale at Charles Jourdan (a New York store). And that is why when I walk down Fifth Avenue I want to hear traffic.

Q. The tone of the above passage is _________.
a. cynical
b. detached
c. ridiculous
d. serious

I went with 'c. ridiculous,' but OA says 'a. cynical' is right. However, I didn't accept that answer. What is your opinion? I want to hear you.
