Both the development of technological tools and the uses to which humanity has put them have created modern civilizations in which loneliness is ever increasing

As we are heading towards a more technologically sound and modern era, the after effects of these changes in our lifestyles are drastic. Depending on an individual and of course on the age group of the people, this change in society has been getting mixed responses. It is truly stated that there may be different uses of the same technology and the humanity must have manipulated some of the ways and the uses where they are used nowadays, which may be critical. But it would not always be wise to blame technological tools for creating loneliness in society or modern era. Let’s look at some examples where latest technologies have proved a boon to the society.

For example, let’s consider a very basic example of an airplane. Life has been changed for almost half of the world’s population. It is a well understood fact that since population has been increased over the course of time, competition has also increased and this has increased the fight for time. Invention of airplane literally made true the saying that, “It’s a small world”. Imagine the times earlier when it took almost half an year to travel from Asia to America. So, technological tools have been a great help to humanity in some cases. Now there have been some bellicose souls who used this technology in an unethical way and attacked the Twin towers on 9/11. The whole humanity should not be compared to such groups and only then we’ll be able to see positive effects of emerging technologies.

There are some examples where technological tools can be blamed for growing loneliness, but solely attributing this factor is not an apt decision. Like, take the example of cell phone. It has definitely made life easier and fast, but people who rely on this technology for almost day and night may lead themselves into an isolated aura of their own. It has its advantages and individuals who know how to main an equilibrium between social life and technology always overcome that loneliness. It completely depends on the nature and priorities of the person. Loneliness talked here may be substituted with the fast pace of life and modified priorities of people over the ages.

Another classic example of the relevant issue may be of television. In earlier times the means of entertainment were having a get together at friend’s place, relatives or some family outings. But as times changed new means of entertainment came into picture, workload and career paths changed. People started enjoying spending time at home after long hours of work. Hence, confusing this means of entertainment with loneliness may not be conscious. Now the humanity has devised various uses of Television too, over the past years like Blue ray DVD’s, flat screen etc. So, development in technology is a never ending process.

People always find a way to satisfy their needs whether technologically or socially. As times have changed and will change in future, the course of development will remain same. Social quotient depends on a particular individual and it would not always be correct to state loneliness as analogous to increasing technologies. Both social interaction and technical growth are two wheels of a cycle. Maintaining an equilibrium between the two may lead to a tranquil environment.

The following is from a television campaign ad:

“Residents of Lawrence County should elect Thornton Campbell as school superintendent in the next election. Thornton Campbell has served as superintendent for 16 years in neighbouring Downs County. Since he became superintendent, Downs county schools have improved their test scores by 43%. If we elect Campbell, Lawrence County school test scores will improve.”

Nowadays television has become a popular media for election campaigns. In a television campaign ad that was aired recently, residents of Lawerence County were asked to elect Tornton Campbell as superintendent in the next election. The campaign supported its claim by saying that Downs county schools improved their test scores by 43%, after Campbell became the superintendent. Likewise, the campaign added, the test scores of Lawrence County schools would improve if Campbell came to power as superintendent of Lawrence County schools. Although it may be possible that Mr. Campbell might have played a role in improving the test scores of students in Downs county, the argument lacks sufficient evidence to prove this fact. Even if Campbell had played a vital role in bringing the test scores of the schools up in Downs County schools, what are the chances that he may be able to repeat the same trend in Lawrence county? There are several factors that influence test scores and it is not clear from the argument whether or not other factors were considered.

The argument lacks sufficient evidence to prove that Campbell was solely responsible for the improvement of the scores of students in Downs County. It is not clear as to what role he played in the schools to bring the scores up -whether he taught classes in addition to being a superintendent or did he persuade the students to take up studies seriously is unclear. If the argument had included details about the specific role Campbell played in order to raise the scores of students, the campaign would have been more credible.

There are several factors that influence the test scores - Teachers, parents, interest of students in studies and many other factors. However, the television campaign directly points to Campbell as the cause for the increase in test scores. The argument is specious because it does show the effect of other factors such as the influence of parents, teacher or principal on test scores.

The argument would be more credible if Campbell’s specific roles in bringing up the scores were provided in the television campaign. Without knowing how he was able bring about an improvement in scores, it would not be possible to trust the assumption made in the argument. Therefore, the claim that Campbell will be able to improve the scores of Lawrence County schools if the people elect him to power is disputatious.

CAN INTERNATIONAL RELATION EVER BE HARMONIOUS

I strongly think that international relationship can never be harmonious. History is laden with the events showing like wars, imperialism, dictatorships primarily because an attempt to blend different cultures and religions. So, in my opinion amity between countries is impractical.

Every religion or culture has its own religious beliefs which might have a vast difference if compared to other religion. Ethos of one religion might hurt the sentiments of another which nurtures the conflict between them. Unless every culture is given freedom to follow their own belief and respected among themselves, relations can never be peaceful. Killing animals such as cow is banned in India as in Hindu culture cow is considered as a sacred animal of worship. Contradictory to the same is eating beef which is very common in western countries. The ethical tradition of one cultural might not be trivial and ignored by the others. This wide gap can never be eliminated.

Religious ethos’s are stringent and are inflexible when it comes to following a ritual, ceremony. Religious extremist don’t compromise, as a result conflicts escalate.

There are also few instances where different cultures are giving equal space and courtesy to other culture. An appropriate example of this can be seen in America, where people of different nationality like Asians, black Americans follow their own culture without criticizing each other. But these are just an attempt to maintain so that people don’t become ethnocentric viewing and comparing other religions based on attitude of one’s own group. People consider their own ethnical group is self righteous and superior to others; as a result cultural disparities can never be eliminated. It was Hilter’s and his Nazi’s group ethnocentric mind set which led to the horrifying deaths of Jewish people and ultimately World War 2. British imperialism during 19th century created resentment and hatred in mind of India’s. Britisher’s attempt to assimilate different cultures resulted in mass revolution and resistance from Indian’s.

The speaker’s contention that the prior cause of inharmonious relations is only due to cultural disparity can be counter questioned. There are few historical instances when people have given more priority to humanity than culture. But the speaker’s claim lacks proper evidences where people shared universal ethos without any clashes.

The other aspect to the speaker’s claim can equally be justified. For instance, Hinduism a religion in India is conglomeration of different religious group. But there are many quarrels among the existing religious groups as they differ in their thoughts. Political parties have fight among their members. Back stabbing, rivalries jealously exist among the same business parties. So, bellicosity exists among every individual and can be considered as a part of human nature.

So, the complete compatibility among various nations is a hypothetical situation but at least these relations can be to a common consent as a part of their mutual understanding. This would be an attempt to ameliorate relations thus encouraging respect and appreciation for other religious ethos. The fact that cultural disparity always lead to strife around the globe cannot be ignored.

TO WHAT EXTENT ORIGNALITY TRULY ORIGINAL

Is originality conjuring up novel ideas or simply putting old ideas in a new way? The definition of originality will vary in different realms of human life. In arts, law and language the originality comes to appropriation of existing ideas and giving it a new aspect. But I don’t agree with the same when it comes to scientific research and technology where originality means conjuring.

In art, law and language originality is building of new ideas on pre-existing ones. An art work is just the artist perception and thoughts about an established idea. Most of the modern movies are based on already published novels or story, the directors presents the whole thing in a way it will appeal the audience. So, the artist, directors ameliorate old work combined and just revise them. The movie by J K Rowling was just an exemplification of themes like magic. So, the artist uses their imagination on the omnipresent ideas to dazzle the public. Mona Lisa painting by Da Vinci Code has been recreated by many modern artists by a minute variation in the painting. Indian modern civilization is based on Harapan culture like the drainage system, infrastructure. All Indian languages like Hindi are rooted from Sanskrit which forms basis of current languages. Similarly the modern English language is derived from ancient Geek and Latin languages. Modern medicines can be regarded as the convergence of old remedies for curing diseased in Geek, Jewish times and new modern advanced researches. Modern music like rock is based on 12 note scale as the classical musical. The remix albums are formed by just giving new harmonies, melodies and rhythm to the old songs.

In scientific area originality for sure is creative fresh ideas leading to discoveries and innovations. No doubt the science is based on physics principle but researches and theories are always new. The earth’s age according the official church if England based on interpretation from Bible was determined to be 6000 years. But the modern science just superseded and rejected this old accepted fact and proved by facts and figures that the real age is 4.5 billion years. New ideas in sciences give a new dimension to the conventional theories and ideas. Modern quantum theory gives a new branch to theoretical physics in endeavor to fundamental principal of matter. Basis of quantum theory is Newton’s old mechanics but is full of new valuable ideas. This is an example of originality based on old and proven facts. On the other hand the Einstein theory of relativity, gravity was truly original. Every new idea in science determines the flaws in the established idea give it a total new approach. Scientific ideas at first hand can be regarded as basis of few principles on the basis of which totally new thoughts are nurtured.

Some of the modern advances in science can be considered as putting old theories and ideas. Like String theory is based on of relativity and quantum theory but put in a new way.

So, the originality is not only ignoring the prevailing ideas but synthesizing them to create some new opinions as far as language, art are considered. On the other hand human beings have made such a tremendous progress in science as new ideas and thinking have no boundaries. There is no limit to knowledge of mankind. A Scientist usually thinks beyond the common existing idea. So, in science it depend on a case whether each new theory is a just a slight twisting of the original idea or actually an igneous thought.

  ACCEPTING NEW IDEAS AND INNOVATIONS
Are the new ideas and innovations readily accepted or they face resentments before they are implemented, as the speaker claims? In my view a social or political conception will be not be embraced. On the contrary, I agree with the speaker’s as far as the scientific and technical innovations are concerned.

Even in the twenty first century politics and law , new ideas are not easily accepted. History depicts that whoever has tried to implement the unconventional ideas has suffered resistance. The great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King followed non violence and satyagarah to obtain their social and political goal. The leaders have to suffer opposition from the people who believed in violence for attainting the freedom. So, on social level new ideas are accepted until they are beneficial for the whole society and come in accord with majority of people. It is the difference in the perception of different group of people which result in motivating new thoughts. The same sex marriage has always been issue of argument and has been opposed by religious groups. These ideas get accepted only when they are passed through a legislative body, finally by the citizen’s votes. Then only these ideas will be espoused by common mass. Similarly, a law get amended and enforced to meet demands and for the satisfaction of the citizens.

In antithesis, consider the innovations in scientific areas. Theorizing of data, facts and innovations is required before they are approved. And theorizing any idea requires the logical proofs.

In common, scientific and technological innovations are generally welcomed as they mark the progress of mankind. But at the same time they have to go through rigorous scrutiny. Ancient Greek theory of earth as the centre of the universe was superseded by modern idea of sun being the centre by Galileo.
So, if the old mythological ideas are not criticized we will never be able to know the true facts. The dissenter’s oppositions are valid and concerned not with the flaws in the native idea but in the beneficial application of it.

Dissenters only examine the pros and cons of certain situation which help to foresee the future problems. Those who opposed the advancement in information technology fear the misuse of internet for exploitation, hacking etc. rather than for education, fast communication. Opponents of nuclear technology criticized it as it can lead to cold wars between the nations harming the security and peace. New business innovation face resistance as it led to the financial crisis of people who are following the old conventional methods.

To sum up, social and political ideas faces the initial opposition but are accepted when they ensure the welfare of the society. Scientific and technological innovations are always embraced but need to be supported by full proof facts and figures when it comes to implementation.
