I bought the Kaplan book and made a flashcard out of every single fact in that sucker. I then took the sample test ETS sends you and did the same for questions I missed. I'm happy with the results so I endorse this study method. It took a lot of time but that can't be avoided. Aside from that I have two other pieces of advice

1) Regarding which historic names to memorize: Use your judgement. Only a small percent of the questions regard actual researchers names, and they are worth memorizing. If you don't know who Piaget, Maslow, or Bandura are, then get to work. However, when I was studying, a handful of names that appeared in Kaplan seemed like small potatoes / not worth memorizing. And I have no regrets. Like I said ... Use your judgement.

2) Since I am living abroad I didn't have the chance to get any intro level psych. books as is often recommended. I know one pompous professor who really enjoys telling the tale of his 100% on the Psych GRE, which he earned by spending 3 hours a piece on a total of 17 intro level books and then he also used the Kaplan book. I truly believe that my only option for raising my score would have been to do the same.

So, in sum, Kaplan is good enough. Just make a flashcard out of every last fact in the book, make use of your practice tests and you should get a good score.
